Nine lawyers have applied for the Nevada Supreme Court seat vacated by the retirement of Nancy Saitta, four of them current district judges.
The list includes four candidates from western Nevada including Gardnerville lawyer Michael Powell and Harriet Cummings of Carson City.
Washoe District Judge Lidia Stiglich is seeking the appointment as is Paul Taggart, a water law expert who currently represents the Southern Nevada Water Authority.
Until Friday, the last day to put in an application, Powell was the only one who had actually filed for the position.
The others on the list are Clark County District Judges Elissa Cadish, Mark Ralph Denton and Susan Johnson. Las Vegas attorneys Michael Buckley and Chris Davis are the remaining two candidates.
The appointments are open to all Nevada lawyers with two years residency and at least 15 years of legal experience.
The Commission on Judicial Selection will now begin the process of conducting background investigations into each applicant, accept public comment and interview each of them.
All of the applications are public with the exception of medical records and personal identification information. The remainder of the applications will be posted on the Supreme Court website.
The commission will accept written comments until Oct. 14 on any of the candidates before narrowing the field to three finalists.
Those three names will be presented to Gov. Brian Sandoval who will make the final selection.
