Ken Beaton: We can’t hide our Carson pride

“Hey Kids, WHAT TIME IS IT?” Saturday was the 27th annual Carson River Clean-up. That’s right; things were being picked up at Ambrose Carson River Natural Area, Brunswick Canyon and along the Carson River.

Two hundred Carson High School Naval Junior ROTC Students, 13 CHS students from the Kiwanis of Carson City sponsored Key Club, 45 White Trash Brigade adults and 27 community adults (285 people) gathered together on a perfect almost fall morning to pick up trash and abandoned junk that got “lost” on the way to the Carson City Landfill.

Rob Scanland, president and Alan Welch of Kiwanis Club of Sierra Nevada coordinated with Anne Bollinger, Carson City’s Open Space administrator for the clean-up. Carson City Parks and Recreation Director Jennifer Budge coordinated efforts with the Carson School District providing buses and vans to transport the NJROTC cadets. Dwight Millard Construction loaned the use of a heavy duty truck for the cleanup.

Rob Scanland addressed the group advising them to be safe.

“Make sure you drink plenty of water. Beware of rattlers in the sage brush. If you see any needles, live shells or any dangerous item, call a responsible adult,” he said. “The Carson community has come together with the Kiwanis Club of Carson City and Kiwanis Club of Sierra Nevada to support this clean-up.”

The Carson Land Fill was open for business as a member of the White Trash Brigade spotted a Suburban with several large black plastic bags in the back heading up a hill while they were picking up trash in Brunswick Canyon. Would you like to guess what was in those black plastic bags? Dr. Phil would like to ask the driver, “What were you thinking?”

The 285 volunteers picked up 40 cubic yards of garbage. Thank you. You deserve a Silver Dollar.
