Prep roundup: CHS girls soccer settles for tie

By the narrowest of margins, the Carson High girls soccer team fell from the perfect ranks Tuesday night at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex.

The Senators tied the game with a goal early in the second half, but were unable to finish off a plethora of opportunities down the stretch and settled for a 1-1 tie with McQueen.

Carson dropped to 5-0-1 while McQueen is 3-2-1.

The Senators had 17 shots on goal, 13 of those coming in the final 40 minutes.

“Soccer is a funny game,” Carson coach Greg Lehman said. “The girls played really well. I’m happy with everything they did. Sometimes the score doesn’t indicate what happened on the field. We had a lot of possessions and played most of the game in their half of the field.”

A defensive mistake enabled McQueen to score in the 12th minute, and the CHS defense led by Valerie Sue Meyer, Hailey Palotas and Brynn Lehman held the Lancers in check the rest of the way.

Carson struck early, tying the match about 90 seconds into the second half when Mallory Otto scored a goal in her sixth straight game.

“It was like a give and go,” Otto said. “Yanitzia (Perez) got the ball to me.”

Carson had a nice through ball in the 7th minute, but was unable to get off a shot, Lauren Hudak had a shot blocked inside the 18-yard mark and Perez got off two unsuccessful shots in the 11th and 13th minute, respectively. In the 25th minute, Otto fed Isabella Wakeling, whose shot was stopped.

In the final two minutes of the match, Carson increased its offensive pressure. Wakeling crossed a ball to Perez, who just barely grazed the ball. Moments later, Sophia Ruedy banged one off the crossbar.

Next up is Galena, which is 6-0. The Grizzlies, who visit Carson at 12:30 Saturday, always play Carson tough. Carson and Douglas have 16 points, two behind Galena.

“They have some good players returning and they are having a good season,” Lehman said. “It should be a good game.”

Carson struggles at Genoa

GENOA — The Senators have their backs to the wall after a disappointing fifth-place finish at Genoa Lakes Tuesday afternoon.

Carson placed fifth (480), six shots behind fourth-place Galena. Bishop Manogue won with a 381 followed by Wooster (434) and Damonte Ranch (452).

Coach Wade Greenlee said the team needs to finish fourth in the next two tournaments to qualify as a team for regionals.

Camryn Aten led the Senators with a 109 followed by Jill Beglin at 114, Angelika Morrison at 115 and Jessika Montes at 142. The medalist was Wooster’s Jessica Stanton.

“Camryn plaed really well,” Greenlee said. “She shot a 51 on the front and would have been in the low 100s if not for a tough 18th hole. She reached the par-5 in three, but an errant chip went into the water, She chipped back onto the green and then 3-putted.

“Jill had a rough day, but she is our top player and I’m confident she will come back strong next week (at Arrowcreek). Sometimes that happens in golf. She continued to grind the whole 18, and I was proud of her for that.”

TENNIS

CHS boys upend Manogue

RENO — Carson won nine of 12 sets in the final two rounds to knock off Bishop Manogue, 12-6, Tuesday afternoon.

Carson improved to 7-1 on the strength of its seventh straight victory after a season-opening loss to Reno.

Taylor Saarem and Jayson Artz went 3-0, dropping just four games. Nico Salm and Danny Dudley also went 3-0, dropping 10 games along the way. In singles, Ryan Tomita went 3-0, dropping just five games. Jared Barnard went 2-1 and Bradley Wiggins went 1-2.

Miners edge Carson girls

Bishop Manogue won five of the first six matches en route to a 10-8 win over Carson.

The loss dropped Carson to 6-2 in league, snapping the Senators’ six-match win streak. Carson played without doubles player Nancy Henricksen.

Becca Trejo, Elise Brady and Shaylin Segura all went 1-2 in singles.

In doubles, Emma Breeding and Anya Woodbury went 2-1 as did Amanda Schulz and Emily McCaskill.

VOLLEYBALL

Muckers top Coleville

COLEVILLE — The Muckers won 25-21. 25-22, 23-25 and 25-14 to improve to 2-1 in Division I play and 9-2 overall,

Bethany Fuller had seven kills and 13 digs, Kaitlin Hames had eight kills and 10 digs, and Chelsea Nevin had seven aces, nine kills, 16 assists and five digs.

In JV action, Virginia City won in three to improve to 3-1 in league.

Douglas sweeps Hug

MINDEN — Douglas rolled to a 25-3, 25-4, 25-7 win. Isabella Peterson had eight kills, Raychel Allen had nine digs and Talyn Jackson added 18 assists for the Tigers.
