Lady Wave golf continue to improve

With only three tournaments remaining before state, the Lady Wave golf team has steadily improved and sits in the top six of the team standings.

Kim Park and Allie Lister each shot a 118 in Tuesday’s tournament at the Fallon golf course, while Julianne Celik shot a 157 and Leena Tomb finished with a 169. The team finished sixth and tied with Dayton with a 562-stroke score.

“Putting was very good for us,” Fallon coach Sandy Vanderbeek said. “The team also had many great drives.”

In Wednesday’s tournament at Dayton, Fallon faced adverse conditions with the wind causing problems coupled with the course’s layout.

“Our golfers did great. It was windy and Dayton is a course with lots of water hazards,” Vanderbeek said.

Park led the Lady Wave with a 117, a personal best, while Lister shot a 118. Tomb had a personal best, as well, with a 153. Fallon didn’t finish with a team score because Celik had to withdraw due to pain in her hand.

“Both (assistant coach Phil) Pinder and I are very happy with their scores and how they handled the course,” Vanderbeek said.

Fallon is off next week before traveling to Winnemucca on Oct. 6. The Lady Wave concludes its regular season with the Truckee tournament, which will be played in Carson City on Oct. 11, and at Fernley. State is Oct. 17-18 in Elko where the top five individual golfers from non-qualifying teams will also compete.
