Carson notebook: CHS makes Case for many firsts

RENO — There were a plethora of firsts in Carson High’s easy 56-0 whitewashing of North Valleys Friday night in the Senators’ final nonleague game of the season.

Jesse Case blocked his first punt and recovered his first fumble of the season.

Kyle Ruedy scored two touchdowns, his first two scores of his varsity career. He scored on a 22-yard pass play and a 27-yard run.

Reserve quarterback Daniel Morrison had his first varsity completion and TD in the final period.

Senior wide receiver Cole Porter, who didn’t play football last year, scored his first career TD at the end of the first half.

Tyler Huling’s 34-yard first-quarter TD reception was his first career TD catch.

“It was nice to see (those guys do well),” Carson coach Blair Roman said. “We were able to get everybody in tonight. We would have liked to have gotten guys in longer, but the running clock makes it tough. I was proud of everybody’s effort tonight.”

Case’s blocked punt set up Carson’s fourth score, a 6-yard run by Abel Carter. On fourth-and-10 from the North Valleys 30, Case roared past a North Valleys lineman and smothered the punt, and he also recovered it at the NV 14.

Case’s fumble recovery set up the first of Ruedy’s two scores in the fourth period.

“He was stepping 2-3 yards back, so I asked coach (Steve) Dilley if I could just rush,” Case said. “I felt like I could get the ball.

“On the fumble, the runner went to switch the ball to his other hand and I punched it out. I feel like I’m part of the team now (that I’ve contributed).”

LOPSIDED SERIES: Roman, who once coached North Valleys, has won nine straight games against the Panthers.

In that span, Carson has outscored NV 365-103. The average margin of victory has been 29 points, and CHS has won three of those game by shutout.

INJURY REPORT: Kellen McDermott injured his ankle and Connor Quilling suffered a first-half shoulder injury.

Receiver Luke Myers (shoulder) and Justin Tschetter (toe) both missed the game.

Both will return next week against Galena in the Sierra League opener.

JV WINS: Carson knocked off North Valleys, 14-12, Thursday night.

The winning score came on a 5-yard run by Blake Menzel. The game-winner was set up by a long interception return by Tucker Nichols.

Chance Smith scored on an 85-yard run for the Senators’ first TD.
