Prestige Care, Carson Tahoe Health break ground on facility

Prestige Care and Carson Tahoe Health broke ground Tuesday on a new skilled nursing and memory care center in Carson City. “I’d like to thank Prestige Care for investing in our community,” said Mayor Bob Crowell at the ceremony. “Skilled nursing is a critical, needed service in our community.”

The Mountain Street facility, expected to open late next year, will be in a two-story, 88,000 square foot building with 80 skilled nursing beds on the first floor and 54 beds for memory care assisted-living residents on the second floor.

The memory care unit will utilize a program developed by Prestige Care called Expressions, a holistic approach to Alzehiemer’s disease and dementia care in which the goal is to enable patients to continue to enjoy life and family while keeping them safe and taking care of their basic needs.

The Carson Tahoe Care Center is a joint venture between 30 year-old Prestige Care, based in Vancouver, Wash., and Carson Tahoe Health, which provided the land, just south of the old hospital, for the facility.

“We had been looking for a partner in this space and the stars aligned,” said Ann Beck, Carson Tahoe Health chief financial officer, after the ceremony. “We were looking for a way to use this property in a meaningful way for the community.”

Prestige Care has 80 such facilities in eight states, including two in southern Nevada, said Hollie Fowler, director of product management.

The center will employ about 125 people, including 45 dedicated to memory care services.

The building was designed by LRS Architects, based in Portland, Ore., and Exxel Pacific, based in Bellingham, Wash., is the general contractor.

The facility will include a park, located along Washington Street.

An independent and assisted-living facility for seniors is planned a few blocks away on Mountain Street as part of the Vintage at Kings Canyon proposed development, which goes before the Planning Commission Thursday.
