It’s another great Northern Nevada spring day as I look out the window at about 4:25 p.m. on a Thursday afternoon and it’s snowing. My guess is I’ll look out the window in five minutes and the sun will be shining.
Carson City boasts 300 days of sunshine a year, which I guess is the among the most days of sunshine anywhere. Of course we don’t tell people on about half of those days we also get rain, wind and snow. And Thursday was one of those days in which we got rain, sun, wind and snow all on the same day. Just another typical spring day in Northern Nevada. Rain, Sun, Wind and Snow — sounds like a pretty good name for a rock band.
Northern Nevada is one of the few places where you could be snowed upon and sunburned all in the same day which happened to me when I covered a softball tournament one year — in May.
Today was another day in which it was really impossible to prepare for the weather. By mid-morning I was ready to walk out the door to take my dogs to Sonoma Park, Pete and Tuf-Tuf (you know Sir Tuffington something or other) and as I looked outside the wind was blowing pretty hard, so I put on my Oregon jacket which I bought at a yard sale for $10 in Salem, Ore., and my Elmer Fudd hat.
So, of course, by the time I finished the 10-minute drive to Sonoma Park, it was warm and sunny. And of course when I think it’s going to be warm and I dress lightly, the wind always picks up.
I shouldn’t have been surprised because the weather at Sonoma Park and the weather at my house near the airport can be quite different. Sonoma Park tends to be a wind tunnel, except for Thursday of course, because I put on my Oregon jacket and my Elmer Fudd hat.
Well, I was wrong as I finish this Popcorn Stand: I look out the window and it’s snowing. For now.
