The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all those, and especially Garth Richards, for making the Richards Crossing housing development a reality. Richards Crossing will serve veterans, the disabled and the homeless.

SILVER DOLLAR: Congratulations to Arthur Westbrook, who was named the new director of Carson City’s Animal Shelter operated by the Nevada Humane Society. And best wishes to Judi Adams, the former director, who had to leave due to health issues.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all those involved in the Step into Spring program that provided more than 300 Carson City students with new shoes. Needy students in the McKinney-Vento Students in Transition program were provided with shoes. Thanks to sponsors Big 5 Sporting Goods and Harley Davidson Financial Services, 352 pairs of shoes were provided.

SILVER DOLLAR: Congratulations to Dayton High’s J.J. Ply, who finished second in the prestigious Arcadia Invitational decathlon with 6,384 points.
