LADY WAVE continues to climb

The Lady Wave remained undefeated over the weekend, winning all three games of their series against Elko’s Lady Indians at the Edward Arciniega Athletics Complex.

A major challenge to this record comes this weekend as the Wave travels to face Lowry — The Lady Bucks are also undefeated in the 3A League and are tied with Fallon for first place.

Fallon coach Tammie Shemenski said she expects Lowry to be a tough game and recalled they typically have strong players. She said the Wave is ready, though, and knows what the Lady Bucks will be able to bring.

“Winnemucca’s going to be strong offensively,” she said. “They always have been; they have good power hitters and that’s what’s going to happen again, I’m sure; and we’ll be ready for it.”

Friday’s game will begin at 3 p.m. at Lowry’s field; Saturday’s doubleheader will be played at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on KTUU FM radio 99.5.

The Lady Wave won Friday’s game against Elko 6-1. Fallon scored three runs in the first inning, then three more in the second. The Lady Indians pushed a runner through in the fourth inning, but it was their only one of the game. Fallon’s Faith Cornmesser’s arm threw true all game, striking out 13 batters.

On Saturday, the Wave won the first game 10-0 and the second 11-0.

The first game started with Fallon scoring two runs in the first inning before picking up four in the second. The third and fourth innings cemented Fallon’s victory with RBI home runs from Alexis Jarrett, with Liz Williams, and Kayla Buckmaster, with Cornmesser.

Buckmaster brought the heat from the circle, pitching all five innings and striking out 10 batters.

The second game kicked off strong with Cornmesser batting in runs from Caitlyn Welch and Jarrett — she scored as well, thanks to another Buckmaster home run for 4-0 in the first inning. The second inning brought the score to 6-0, then 7-0 in the third. Fallon took off in the fourth inning, scoring another four runs before striking out Elko in the top of the fifth.

Cornmesser had another on-fire game with five strikeouts.

Shemenski said her team “sat on the ball longer” and hit the line drives they needed. She said they drove the ball well. There were some mistakes, like a dropped pop fly, but overall the coach said she was happy with the outcome.

“We’re going to have to clean it up just a little bit, especially for some upcoming games,” she said. “We need to be sure we’re not doing those baubles or drops or anything like that.”

Alexis Jarrett led in runs, scoring seven with five RBI.

The coach said all three games were solid team wins. She praised the versatility of her players and recalled they are all able to step in and play any role. She recalled there were times she wanted to get a bench player on and could substitute them anywhere on the field.

“Anyone can step in for pretty much anyone at any time,” she said. “I have a few third basemen, a couple second basemen, in the outfield it’s pretty open … I have such a good team; everybody stands out to me when they get their opportunity.”

During practice this week, Shemenski said the team would be working on hitting and working to become better with pop flies and ground balls. She noted any team could come back to win and her players had to be ready for anything.

“I need my girls to stay focused, stay ready and just continue to play like we do,” she said.
