The Nevada Senate on Tuesday passed SB196 mandating certain Nevada businesses provide employees with sick leave.
Majority Leader Aaron Ford, D-Las Vegas, said the bill was the product of significant compromise including amendments requested by business organizations such as the chambers of commerce, nonprofit and charitable organizations. He said those types of organizations along with certain other professions were exempted from the requirement as are businesses with fewer than 50 employees.
Despite that, the bill passed on a party line vote 12-9 with Republicans opposed.
SB196 requires employers provide workers with at least one hour paid sick leave for each 30 hours worked up to a maximum of 48 hours a year and limit leave taken to 24 hours a year.
