Nov. 30, 1932 ~ March 20, 2017
Donald George “Duffy” Hand, age 84, passed Monday, March 20, 2017, at his home in Carson City surrounded by his beloved wife and children.
He was born November 30, 1932 in Newark, New Jersey to the late James Donald and Lillian Cline Hand.
He attended high school in Madison, New Jersey. From 1953 to 1955, he served in the United States Army during which time he earned his marksmanship medal.
After being honorably discharged, he met the love of his life, Gail Weber, and they were married in Morristown, New Jersey on November 28, 1957.
In January of 1960, Duffy and Gail moved to Southern California where Duffy began working in the construction industry. In 1974, the family moved to Carson City, Nevada and in 1978 Duffy started D.G. Hand Construction Company out of a room in their home. Integrity and trust were very important to him. He was a man of his word – many deals were made over a handshake.
During his career, Duffy was President of the Builders Association of Western Nevada, and also served the National Association of Home Builders. Hand Construction Company was honored to be awarded Contractor of the Year several times.
His hobbies included hunting and fishing with his sons, golfing, water and snow skiing and remote control helicopters.
Nothing gave Duffy greater pleasure than seeing his family together. So in 1984, seeking a place for the family to spend extended time together, Duffy and Gail became houseboat owners. For 26 years, three generations of Hands enjoyed boating, fishing, swimming and waterskiing together at Bullard’s Bar in California.
When Duffy retired he and Gail traveled in their motor home from coast to coast, through Canada and Alaska.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Gail; his three children, Heidi (Steve), Logan (Debbie), and Adam (Wendy); eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, April 29th, from 1:30 pm – 4:00 pm at the Silver Oak Golf Course, 1251 Country Club Drive, Carson City, Nevada 89703; 775-841-7000.
