Prep roundup: Dayton baseball on a roll, sweeps DH

SPARKS — Dayton High’s baseball team got standout pitching performances from Dylan Baker and Isaac Von Schoff to sweep Sparks, 6-0 and 6-2, Friday afternoon in a 3A doubleheader.

Dayton improved to 15-3-1 overall.

The Dust Devils, who have won 12 straight, visit Sparks today at 10 a.m. to close out the three-game series.

The Dust Devils have a two-game lead in the loss column with single games left against Sparks and South Tahoe, and a three-game series against Fallon next weekend.

“We were fortunate to win both today,” Dayton coach Mike Burrows said. “Our pitching carried us on a day when the offense struggled. Isaac and Dylan did a good job on the mound.

“We stranded a lot of runners and ran ourselves out of some innings. We played down a level today, and the team as a whole was disappointed in our effort. It will be interesting to see how we respond (today).”

Baker threw the opener, allowing four hits and striking out six.

Despite Baker’s effort, the game was scoreless through five.

In the top of the sixth, Jesse Schmidt doubled and Baker walked.

After a double steal, Justin Schmidt hit a two-run single to break the scoreless tie.

Zach Woitas followed with a run-scoring hit to make it 3-0.

In the seventh, an error, hit batsman and walk loaded the bases. Woitas walked to force in a run and Von Schoff singled home two runs to complete the scoring.

Jesse Schmidt had the only extra-base hit. Trevor Burrows and C.J. Wilhite also hit safely for the Dust Devils.

The second game saw the Dust Devils take controlearly, scoring one in the first on a bases-loaded walk to Nick Hein.

Dayton made it 5-0 with four runs in the second as Jay Madson, Jesse Schmidt, Baker and Hein all singled, and Justin Schmidt had a run-scoring double. Dayton also took advantage of a walk, hit batsman and an error.

Sparks scored twice off Van Schoff in the third, but was held scoreless the rest of the way.

Dayton scored its final run in the fourth on a double by Hein, who had two hits and three RBI.

SOFTBALL

Dust Devils sweep Railroaders

SPARKS — The Dust Devils improved to 4-11 with a sweep of Sparks on Friday afternoon, winning 9-0 and 9-5.

Caleigh Onstott threw a 1-hitter, losing the no-hitter in the bottom of the seventh.

She fanned five and walked four.

“Caleigh pitched very well and kept the hitters off balance,” coach Dusti Houk said. “The defense backed her up by not making any errors.”

Dayton took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the first game, as Julie Rogacs hit an RBI double, and Sparks made an error, allowing Onstott to score.

In the fifth, Aleea Howe hit a two-run double to make it 4-0, and Rogacs had a run-scoring single for a 5-0 lead.

Dayton added four in the seventh on a two-run hit by Bri Hill, a run-scoring single by Onstott and a passed ball.

Howe and Onstott led the offense with two hits apiece.

In the second game, Tamia Powell went 3-for-4 with two triples and two runs scored.

Howe went 2-for-3. Elizabeth Vincent and Hill added a hit apiece.

JV BASEBALL

Carson overpowers Galena in Thursday action

RENO — Garritt Benavidez drove in four runs with a double and two singles, and Josh Buchan went 4-for-5 with two RBI to lead the Senators to a 13-6 win over the Grizzlies on Thursday afternoon.

Carson put the game out of reach early with a single run in the first, six in the second and two in the fourth en route to a 9-2 lead.

Gryphon Matthies added two hits and two RBI, and Delsin Roberts added two hits. Ryan Wright, Josh Ingram and Kenn Aydelott all had one hit.
