Local sports: Nevada basketball adds Omaha transfer

RENO – University of Nevada head men’s basketball coach Eric Musselman has signed Tre’Shawn Thurman to a scholarship agreement to play for the Wolf Pack in 2018-19. Thurman transfers to Nevada from University of Omaha and will sit out next season under NCAA transfer rules and has one year to play for the Wolf Pack.

“We are extremely excited about the addition of Tre’Shawn Thurman to our Wolf Pack program,” Musselman said. “He is the perfect fit for what we are trying to do on both ends of the floor. We love his versatility, ability to rebound the ball, and toughness.”

The 6-7, 230-pound forward from Omaha, Neb., averaged 13.8 points and 7.8 rebounds this past season and was named to the Summit League honorable mention team. Thurman shot 49.7 percent from the field and 67.3 percent at the free throw line. He was named Summit League Player of the Week after averaging 17 points, 10.5 rebounds and two steals in two Maverick road wins at Iowa and Cal State Fullerton.

In 22 games he scored double figures with six being contests of 20 or more points. He recorded nine double-doubles and 11 times grabbed 10 or more rebounds in game. As a sophomore he ranked in the top 10 in 10 categories in the Summit League.

In five road games at Power 5 schools he scored in double figures four times and posted a double-double at USC with 20 points and 14 rebounds. At Kansas State he netted 10 points and grabbed six boards. In an upset 98-89 victory at Iowa he scored 17 points and just missed a double-double with his nine rebounds. At Pitt, he scored 18 points and came up one rebound short of a double-double with nine.

In his three seasons he started 90 of the 93 games in which he played and posted career averages of 12.5 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. From the field he shot 50.3 percent and 65.4 percent from the free throw line. His freshman year he averaged 9.5 points and 5.6 rebounds. As a sophomore his numbers improved to 13.9 points and 6.7 boards.

SOFTBALL

Salceido blanks Panthers

RENO — Jailene Salceido pitched a two-hit shutout and drove in three runs to lead Carson to an easy 9-0 win over North Valleys.

Carson improved to 6-8 in league play, and hosts Damonte Ranch in an 11 a.m. doubleheader on Saturday.

“Jailene was lights out,” coach Shane Quilling said. “They got two hits, but it really should have been a one-hitter. She was dialed in and had good velocity. We didn’t make any errors for once; didn’t give them any free bases.”

Salceido retired the first eight of the game and then she finished the game with 10 consecutive outs. She fanned six and didn’t walk a batter.

Carson broke a scoreless tie in the third when Bella Kordonowy reached on a dropped third strike and scored on a single by Salceido.

An error, stolen base and two bunts, the latter by Alex Salceido, made it 2-0 in the fourth.

Carson added three in the third for a 5-0 lead on run-scoring doubles by Kordonowy and Salceido, and a single by Camryn Quilling.

Carson added three in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Camryn Quilling finished with three hits, while Kordonowy and Salceido added two each. Kailee Luschar added one hit.

BASEBALL

Wooster 6, Douglas 5

RENO — Wooster scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a 6-5 walk-off win at home against Douglas on Thursday.

Douglas (8-10 league, 11-12 overall) held leads of 2-0, 4-2 and 5-3, only to see Wooster (9-8, 14-12) rally in the seventh. Tyler Vetter and Jonathan Pitch hit singles to lead off the inning, then Alex Malcolm reached on an error to load the bases with no outs. Tyler Black hit a ground ball single into right field to drive two runs home and tie the score at 5-all. Malcolm scored the winning run when Zac Whitely’s ground ball was misplayed for an error.

Jayden Foster pitched 6 innings and hit 2-for-3 to help put Douglas in position to win. Haydn Brown absorbed the loss after he took over in relief to start the seventh.

Tristan Futch hit a full-count single to drive Foster home with a run that extended the Tigers’ lead to 5-3 in the top of the seventh.

Whitely pitched the final three innings and allowed one run on three hits to earn credit for the win.

JV BASEBALL

Damonte slams Senators

The Mustangs scored in all five of their at-bats en route to an easy 18-2 win over the Senators Thursday afternoon.

Damonte had seven in the first and eight in the fourth, pummeling Carson pitchers for 18 hits. Five errors accounted for seven unearned runs.

Carson managed just four hits, one each by Kenny Aydelott, Garritt Benavides, Mark Trost and Zach Glanzmann. Aydelott was credited with Carson’s only RBI.
