Prep roundup: Dayton High baseball tied for 1st

FALLON — Dayton High’s baseball team fell into a first-place tie in 3A play after splitting a doubleheader against Fallon on Saturday.

The Dust Devils dropped the opener 5-4, but came back to win the nightcap, 2-1.

Dayton has four games left in the regular season — Tuesday at South Tahoe and then a three-game series at home against Truckee starting Friday.

“We knew this series would have a real playoff feel to it and it did,” Dayton coach Mike Burrows said. “There was good pitching on both sides and pretty clean defense by both clubs.

“We are now tied with Spring Creek, and I think we’re really going to win out to get a bye in the first round of the playoffs.”

Isaac Von Schoff pitched well in the second game, scattering seven hits and fanning five in 6.2 innings. Jesse Schmidt came on to get the last out of the game.

“Isaac was outstanding when we needed him the most,” Burrows said. “He was able to pitch through some errors. I can’t say enough about his performance on the hill.”

Fallon scored one in the first thanks to a single, sacrifice bunt and error.

Dayton scored two in the third when C.J. Wilhite walked, moved to second on a passed ball, to third on a single by Trevor Burrows and scored on a passed ball. Burrows scored on a single by Dylan Baker.

Both pitchers settled down, and put zeroes on the board the rest of the way. Fallon actually out-hit Dayton, 7-6.

Baker led Dayton’s offense with two hits, and Burrows, Baker, Jake Madson, Jesse Schmidt and Justin Schmidt added a hit each.

In the first game, Fallon scored five runs in the first two innings, and then fought off a late Dayton surge to win it.

“We made some mistakes defensively early in the first game and hit into three double plays in the first four innings,” coach Burrows said. “We had the bases loaded in the seventh, but couldn’t execute.”

Dayton outhit Fallon, 12-6.

Madson singled home a run to make it 5-1 in the fifth, and Jesse Schmidt, Justin Schmidt and Zach Woitas hit singles leading to two more runs to make it 5-3 in the sixth. Jesse Schmidt drove in a run in the seventh, but Nick Hein hit into a force out to end the contest.

Burrows, Justin Schmidt, Woitas and Madson all had two hits.

Galena sweeps Douglas

MINDEN — Galena scored twice in the top of the seventh inning, aided by two errors and Niko Pezonella’s single to drive home the go-ahead run, as the Grizzlies rallied for a 5-4 win Saturday in game two of a doubleheader at Douglas.

Galena also came from behind to win game one, 9-6, and sweep both ends of the Northern 4A doubleheader at Tiger Field.

Douglas (8-12 league, 11-14 overall) led 2-1 in the opener, only to see the Grizzlies come back to score five runs in the fourth inning. In game two, Douglas was unable to hold on after holding leads of 3-1 and 4-3. The Tigers had broken a 3-all tie in the sixth inning after Kindel Isham singled, stole second and scored on a wild pitch.

Galena (13-6, 16-12) remained in third-place in the conference standings. The Grizzlies will be at home on Monday to complete a protest game against Wooster. The game will pick up in the sixth inning with Wooster holding a 7-6 lead.

SOFTBALL

Mustangs sweep Carson

Damonte Ranch used two late rallies to record a sweep over Carson, 7-4 and 11-7, Saturday at Carson.

The sweep dropped Carson to 6-10 with just two games against Wooster and a season-ending doubleheader left at Douglas on Saturday.

“It was a frustrating day,” coach Shane Quilling said. “Both games were winnable. The first game we made four errors, and I think we only gave up two earned runs. I was disappointed that we didn’t hit well the first game. We were up 6-2 the second game and they broke it open.”

In the opener, Damonte rolled to a 4-0 lead but Carson fought back to 4-3 thanks to a three-run sixth thanks to singles by Terryn Earle and Kailee Luschar, a double by Camryn Quilling and a triple by Jailene Salceido. Damonte won it in the seventh with three runs thanks to a hit batsman, two singles, a sacrifice bunt and an error. Alex Salceido tripled and scored on an error to complete the scoring.

Earle had two hits, and Luschar, Jailene and Alex Salceido, Quilling and Kassidy Cooley had one each.

In the second game, Carson scored four in the third and one each in the fourth and fifth to take a 6-2 lead. The Mustangs, however, roared back with a nine-run sixth inning thanks to seven hits, including a grand slam by Anna Bonk. Carson countered with one in the sixth to complete the scoring.

Bella Kordonowy led Carson, homering twice, walking twice and driving in five runs. She had a three-run homer in the third and a solo shot to lead off the fifth.

Luschar and Alex Salceido also had two hits in the second game, while Quilling, Cooley, Camiell Simpson and Faith Bigelow added one each.

Douglas 17-16, Wooster 0-1

RENO — Jasmin McNinch slugged a pair of three-run homers in the third inning to help spark Douglas to a 17-0 win in the opener of a Northern 4A doubleheader at Wooster on Saturday.

The Tigers won game two, 16-1, behind the complete game three-hit pitching of Deztiny Vaughan. Douglas scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to break open the second game.

Game one was called after the Tigers scored 12 runs in the third inning. Kettja Bennett pitched three hitless innings for Douglas (6-10 league, 8-20 overall). In addition to the home runs from McNinch, Bailey Walters went 2-for-3 with three RBI and Bennett 2-for-3 with two RBI.

In game two, McNinch hit 3-for-4 with two RBI, Casey Peck hit 3-for-5, Walters 2-for-4 with three RBI and Bennett 2-for-4 with three RBI.

The sweep enabled Douglas to move into a seventh-place tie with Carson in the conference playoff race.

Fallon takes 2 from Dayton

FALLON — The Greenwave swept Dayton, 10-0 and 6-4, Saturday afternoon in a 3A doubleheader.

In the opener, Dayton managed just a double by Tamia Powell and a single by Marissa Hein in the mercy rule loss.

In the second game, Fallon broke a 4-all tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Dayton put a runner on first with one out in the seventh, but couldn’t get her around.

Amanda Woitas was the big hitter for Dayton, smashing a solo homer and two-run double. Aleea Howe went 3-for-3 with a triple and two singles.

JV BASEBALL

Carson, Wooster split

The Carson and Wooster JV squads split their two-game weekend series.

Carson won 9-3 on Friday and lost 9-8 on Saturday.

Zach Glanzmann and Devin Elder combined on a 1-hitter in Friday’s win. Josh Ingram went 3-for-4, and Garritt Benavidez and Josh Buchan added two hits apiece. Kenny Aydelott. Delsin Roberts and Gryphon Matthies had a hit apiece.

In the Saturday loss, Buchan, Ingram and Randy Herrera had two hits apiece.
