The National Newspaper Association has announced its 2016 winners in the Better Newspaper Contest.
Awards will be presented Oct. 6 in Tulsa, Ok., at the annual convention.
There were 1,433 entries in the Better Newspaper Editorial Contest and 221 entries in the Better Newspaper Advertising Contest for a total of 1,654 entries. A total of 475 awards were won by 117 member newspapers in 33 states.
California had the most combined BNC/BNAC wins with 56, followed by Wyoming with 48 and Texas and Iowa tying at 47.
The Lahontan Valley News placed in four categories in the circulation category of 6,000 or fewer.
Thomas Ranson garnered a first-place award in photography for his photo of Conner Nelson jumping over a Fernley football player for a touchdown in the 2016 season opener.
The LVN’s editorial pages under the guidance of now retired LVN Editor Steve Ranson placed second overall. The four components of editorial pages included columns, editorials, letters to the editor and cartoons.
Honorable mention went to page designer Laci Thompson and Steve Ranson for a photo essay on recognizing military heroes.
Four newspapers including the LVN were selected for General Excellence.
