Auditions will be held next week for Churchill County School District’s performance of the Broadway musical “Annie.”

Students in grades 3 through 12 are invited to audition for roles in performances taking place during the two weekends following Thanksgiving.

Times and dates for auditions in the Churchill County High School Auditorium are as follows.

Audition workshops: Monday (Aug. 7) – Students auditioning for “children” roles gather at 2 p.m.; students auditioning for “adult” roles gather at 3:30 p.m.

Auditions for “children” roles are Tuesday (Aug. 8) at 3:30 p.m. and Wednesday (Aug. 9) at 3:30 p.m. for “adult” roles.

Call-backs will be on Aug. 11 at 3:30 p.m.

If students have a scheduling conflict for auditions on Aug. 8 or 9, they can audition early on Monday (Aug. 7) at 5 p.m. in the auditorium.

STUDENTS’ SCULPTURES

Sculptures by students from the University of Nevada, Reno, are being displayed in Carson City courtesy of the Capital City Arts Initiative.

The student exhibition, titled ART from UNR, is being displayed at the Community Development Building, 108 E. Proctor St.

The building is open daily from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. The free exhibition opened July 11 and will remain in the building’s lobby exhibition space through Oct. 19.

This past semester, 36 University of Nevada, Reno students collaborated to create two large sculptures inspired by Louise Nevelson, one of America’s most distinguished artists.

Each student built a wood box and created their own composition of gathered found-wood pieces; the boxes were then combined into the large sculptures. Nevelson provides the inspiration for students to explore formal elements of sculpture — mass, plane, line, color, and texture, along with compositional elements including positive and negative space, directional quality, and repetition.

BREWERY ARTS CENTER

It’s time again to grab your family, friends and neighbors and head on down to Brewery Arts Center in Carson City and enjoy this week’s family-friendly free outdoor concert, Thee Commons.

The Levitt AMP Carson City Music Series presents 10 free, family-friendly concerts to the public currently at Minnesota Street Stage. The series still has a diverse lineup of high caliber talent left to present spanning genres like Reggae, Southern Rock, Cumbia, Bluegrass and much more.

This week’s show begins at 7 p.m. on Saturday (but remember to get here early to get a good seat). We start with local band called Whatitdo.

Whatitdo takes the listener on a funk voyage. It’s a sonic journey through a variety of music and at the same time the music is compulsively danceable.

WASHOE LAKE STATE PARK

August events at Washoe Lake State Park include an astronomy program, a sunset hike and an introduction to Washoe Lake slide show.

Astronomy Program. Meet at the Maze Parking Lot for a program about astronomy. Ancient cultures studied and mapped the stars for various reasons. Hear their stories while stargazing with park staff. Please bring a jacket and a folding chair if possible, as seating is limited. Participants are also encouraged to bring a red flashlight, as red light does not negatively affect night vision.

WHEN: Saturday, Aug. 5, 8:30-9:30 p.m.

WHERE: Washoe Lake State Park, Maze Parking Lot. Take Exit 44 from I-580 and drive north approximately four miles on Eastlake Blvd. The park entrance is on your left. Turn left past the fee booth, and it will be the first parking lot on the right.

COST: $7 per vehicle; there is a $2 discount for Nevada residents. Cash or check only.

Sunset Hike. Meet at the North Boat Ramp Equestrian Parking Area for a sunset hike through the sand dunes. Reservations are required for this one mile round-trip walk. Participants should bring a flashlight and wear sturdy hiking shoes, as the trail is very sandy.

WHEN: Monday, Aug. 7, 8-9 p.m.

Introduction to Washoe Lake State Park Slide Show. Learn what makes Washoe Lake State Park such a unique place during this 30-minute slide program. If weather permits a campfire, we will make s’mores.

WHEN: Wednesday, Aug. 16, 8-9 p.m.

WHERE: The Equestrian Area is in the Main (south) part of Washoe Lake State Park. Take Exit #44 from I-580 and drive north on Eastlake Blvd. for approximately four miles. The park entrance will be on your left. Enter the park, turn right, pass the campground, and follow a short gravel road to the Equestrian Pavilion.

COST: $7 per car; there is a $2 discount for Nevada residents. Cash or check only.

FORT CHURCHILL PHOTO CONTEST

Fort Churchill State Historic Park has its third annual amateur photo contest. Visitors to Fort Churchill and Buckland Station are invited to submit nature photos from within the park. Visitors to Fort Churchill and Buckland Station are invited to submit photos of scenery, plants, wildlife and cultural resources found within the park. The top three winners will receive a Nevada State Parks Passport Permit, good for free entrance to any Nevada State Park for an entire year.

Entries must be submitted as an 8 x 10 or smaller photograph and dropped off at Buckland Station on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. or mailed to Nevada State Parks, Fort Churchill Photo Contest Entry, 16799 Lahoantan Dam, Fallon, NV 89406. Entries are due by Oct. 1, and will be on display for public voting at Buckland Station from Oct. 7-Dec. 31.
