Carson High opened its 2017 season Monday with its yearly conditioning run and a 2 1/2-hour practice.

The Senators, who went 5-5 overall and 2-2 in league, will return to the field today at 7:15 a.m. The first time Carson will be allowed to wear pads is Thursday.

“It was a good first day; a positive first practice,” said head coach Blair Roman, who currently has 56 players on his roster led by all-state and all-region star Abel Carter. “I’m pleased with our numbers. We have the numbers to develop depth. Time will tell.”

Roman, whose team will scrimmage Fallon, Reno and Spanish Springs a week from Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Fallon, said most of the players passed the conditioning run.

“It (the run) has become a neat tradition that we have,” he said. “If you want to be one of the best teams and play against the top teams, you better be in good shape.”

Until the pads come on, Roman said the Senators will work on their offensive installation and do some defensive review. And, there will be a lot of special teams schemes installed.

There was some good news. Daniel Morrison, who suffered a knee injury last week, was back in practice. He made a couple of starts late last season after Jace Keema was lost for the season with a foot injury.

“We will see how his knee holds up,” Roman said.

Morrison, a senior, is being backed up by Blake Menzel, who started on the junior varsity team a year ago, and Roman is very high on the junior quarterback.

“We have a good portion of our offense already in,” Roman said. “We are in a pretty good spot.

“Offensively, we do what we do. We are working on our execution. The kids have been running this stuff since their freshman seasons. We want to execute at a high level.”

Dallin Schaffer, Blaise Bonomo, Chandler Tierney and Brandon Macias all have seen time on the offensive line, and they will be counted on to open holes for Carter, who gained 1,887 yards and rushed for 24 touchdowns.
