Alfredo Eduardo Valdez was sentenced Tuesday to a maximum of 10 years in prison for battery with a deadly weapon causing substantial bodily harm.
Prosecutor Garrit Pruyt asked for the maximum 6-15-year sentence that crime carries. District Judge James Wilson ordered a sentence of 4-10 years in prison.
Pruyt said Valdez was originally charged with attempted murder for hitting American Horse Skennadore in the head with either a tire iron or a weighted hammer. The impact caused a skull fracture and significant damage to the facial bones on the left side of the head.
He said Skennadore has a plate in his head and suffers from memory loss, severe migraines and partial loss of vision as a result of the attack.
