SunOpta Inc. is closing its Carson City facility on Dec. 22.
The organic food company is dropping its nutrition bar product line that’s manufactured out of its Conestoga Drive plant.
The closure eliminates 70 jobs, according to Jeff Gough, chief human resources officer at the company.
Gough said all employees will be given severance pay and have been provided with job placement assistance, including job fairs with other local employers that were conducted on site.
The closure was announced in September. SunOpta said then it would cost between $8 million to $9.5 million to close the plant, comprising between $5 million to $6 million to write down assets and $3 million to $3.5 million in severance and other closing costs.
The public company is based in Mississauga, Ontario and has U.S. headquarters in Edina, Minn. Revenue from nutrition bars was $13 million in 2016 and $11 million in the first half of 2017.
Nature’s Bakery, another organic snack bar maker, announced earlier this week it plans to reduce its Carson City operations from three shifts to one starting in February, eliminating 80 jobs at the Convair Drive plant.
