The Sheriffalty: A vacancy having been caused in the Sheriffalty of this county by the death of Mr. Smith, it becomes the duty of the Board of County Commissioners to fill that office by appointment. He who has been removed by the murder’s bullet was singularly well adapted to the position, being a man of remarkable force of character, stern resolve and impressed with a strong and constant sense of duty.

Doing business: George Meyers’ new store will be ready to transact business today. He began to unpack his goods several days ago, and from that moment his friends were on hand to make purchases.

Some of the goods were sold on the sidewalk and never got in the store at all. Looks like Meyers’ grocery was starting up with a good volume of business.

The Senate today definitely transferred the nationwide prohibition fight to the state legislatures when it adopted the house amendments to the prohibition measure 47 to 8. Three-fourths of the states must adopt the amendment before it becomes part of the Constitution.
