Darrell Moody: Basketball schedule change a good thing

At least, or so it appears, people in Northern Nevada are starting to make some sense when it comes to high school sports.

According to Carson High athletic director Blair Roman, starting next basketball season, crossover games won’t count in the standings. Roman said the decision was made at a recent meeting involving the athletic directors. He said it would take affect for the 2018-19 season.

For CHS, that means the 10 Sierra League games will decide who gets into the playoffs.

The positive is that schools that go deep into the football playoffs, as Carson did for a while, won’t have to play a league game until they are at full strength.

I recall former CHS basketball coach Carlos Mendeguia always asking coaches to reschedule those late November games. Some coaches were agreeable, others were not. It almost got to be a game. I recall last season that Spanish Springs refused to re-schedule, and since it was their home game they had the right to say no. Carson had just four days of practice with its full team.

The negative part, and this may have already been figured out, is how ties will be broken when teams split the head-to-head meetings.

I would have preferred to see a triple round-robin if for no other reason than it would serve as a natural tiebreaker.

It certainly would make more sense to have just one big league and play a home-and home schedule. To do that, however, teams would be limited to just one tournament, and probably isn’t acceptable to coaches.

And, while we’re on the subject of high school sports, the state wrestling tournament is being held at the Orleans Arena.

The Orleans is a great venue, but it refused to host the state basketball tournament last year, because Station Casinos is/was the primary sponsor of the NIAA, and the Orleans is a Boyd Gaming property. That is the reason state basketball ended up at Cox Pavilion on the UNLV campus.

The sides have obviously come to some sort of agreement, and that’s a good thing, because the venue is a good one.

Nice to see the Carson girls finish around the .500 mark for its non-conference schedule.

Lily Bouza has been impressive at the offensive end and Bella Kordonowy has been rebounding the ball well. Bouza has shown good aggressiveness.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the Carson girls need to take basketball a little more seriously. For too many of the girls, basketball is their second or third sport. Unless the time commitment changes, I don’t see the Senators making any great strides.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed. It would be nice to see Carson be a solid No. 2 team behind Manogue in the Sierra League.
