Fund to enhance sage grouse, water quality

The USDA’s Regional Conservation Partnership Program has created an $8 million fund to support initiatives conserving the Bi-State population of greater sage grouse and enhancing ranch water quality in the region.

The fund will be available for five years to landowners in portions of Douglas, Lyon, Carson City, Mineral, and Esmeralda counties in Nevada and Inyo, Mono, and Alpine counties in California.

Ranchers can apply to receive funds from this pool in order to complete projects that will enhance sage grouse habitat and improve water quality on property they own and manage.

Examples of eligible projects include contracts to restore wetlands, construct wildlife-friendly fencing, prevent erosion by planting native grasses and shrubs, and reduce nonpoint source pollution to creeks and rivers. Priority will go to voluntary conservation easements on private ranches and wetlands that provide sage-grouse habitat.

Local organizations such as Eastern Sierra Land Trust will be available to advise landowners and assist them in the application process.

Dr. Daniel Peterson joins CTMG staff

Carson Tahoe Medical Group welcomed Dr. Daniel Peterson to its staff on Feb. 1.

Dr. Peterson has been serving the Incline Village community for more than 35 years, and is a pioneer in treating myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome, ME/CFS.

Not only will Dr. Peterson continue practicing at his current location, but his patients will now have greater access to the Carson Tahoe Health System of care. From providing 24-hour emergency services, to delivering babies and performing open heart surgery, Carson Tahoe works with its skilled physicians, nurses, and care providers to ensure the most advanced care is available to our entire region.

The transition will involve his internal medicine practice only, and will not affect his research or infusion components. Carson Tahoe is working with Dr. Peterson’s existing patients to ensure their care during this transition is as seamless as possible.

Plans include expanding access to primary care providers and other medical specialties for the Incline Village community.

Gilman joins NNDA board

Lance Gilman, a Storey County commissioner and principal of the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center, has been appointed to the executive board of Northern Nevada Development Authority (NNDA).

“I am absolutely thrilled to be on the executive team of NNDA,” said Gilman. “This group is very dynamic and is focused on making Northern Nevada a business friendly place. We hope NNDA and TRI can develop a very close working relationship during this coming year.”

The large industrial park is home to Tesla Motors’ battery factory and Switch data center company and more than 120 other businesses.

NNDA promotes economic development in Carson City, Douglas and Lyon counties and the Comstock District of Storey County.

“Mr. Gilman adds a new dimension to the board due to his experience in development and business. He is a valuable asset to the team,” said Rob Hooper, executive director, NNDA.
