It’s been a great season for Lady Wave basketball, completing their second undefeated league season in a row in the Northern 3A. Saturday’s game in Truckee saw the team end the season taking down the Lady Wolverines 43-13.

The teams were prepared for each other after their first game of the season. Both had a strong defense, but the Lady Wolverines couldn’t hold Fallon’s offense back completely. The Wave broke through and swept Truckee for a 15-0 first quarter.

The second quarter was almost another sweep as Fallon pressed its attack, climbing to a 25-point lead. Truckee finally got on the board, though, as Maddie Monson nailed a free throw, followed shortly by another. Once the Wave regained possession, Lailani Otuafi took back the points before Brynlee Shults closed the half 31-2.

As the second half started, Fallon started bringing in the bench team. Truckee’s defense remained strong, but so did the Wave’s and both teams struggled to score. At the end of the quarter Truckee sank a free throw, but their players had a ways to catch up, 39-3.

The final quarter was Truckee’s time to shine. The Lady Wolverine’s offense exploded out and started advancing. The Wave scored the least points of the game, only going up four points to Truckee’s 10.

Fallon coach Anne Smith said her team performed well. She especially praised their defensive game and noted the second team’s was just as strong as the first.

“The girls did a good job,” she said. “I’m a defensive coach; I like defense … I think we’re performing as we want to.”

Kaitlyn Hunter led the Wave, scoring eight points with two free throws; she also had two rebounds and steals. Faith Cornmesser followed with seven points from five free throws; she tallied four rebounds and two steals. Otuafi and Zoey Swisher each scored six points, though Otuafi nailed six rebounds and steals while Swisher had one of each. Shults only scored two points, but also had six rebounds.

This week, the Lady Wave travel to the regional tournament in Winnemucca. Since they won first place in the league, they play Friday in the semifinals at 6:20 p.m. They will play either Fernley, South Tahoe or Spring Creek, depending on the results of yesterday’s games — the results were unavailable at the time of press.
