There was never any doubt Saturday when Bishop Manogue sprinted to a 65-32 victory against Reno in the Northern 4A Region Tournament girls basketball championship game at Tom Andreasen Court in Carson City.
Seniors Katie Turner and Malia Holt combined for an early 9-0 lead and the Miners never looked back on the way to their third straight region title.
Manogue (25-2 overall) advances to the NIAA State Championships on Thursday and Friday in Las Vegas. Reno (25-5) was appearing in its fifth straight region championship game.
Holt led all scorers with 24 points, 13 of which came in the first quarter with three 3-pointers. Turner also scored 13 and senior Maddie Camacho had 13.
Turner scored on Manogue’s opening possession, then Holt scored on a drive and connected on a 3-pointer off an assist from Turner, and Turner scored on a layup to make it 9-0 with 3:40 left in the first quarter. Holt scored on a drive to beat the buzzer as Manogue took a 19-5 lead after one quarter.
Manogue shot 5-for-7 from beyond the arc in the game’s opening 3 minutes, 11 seconds.
Holt scored on another buzzer-beater, a medium range jumper that extended Manogue’s lead to 38-13 at halftime. The Miners were up 58-24 after three quarters.
Kaitlyn Biasso led Reno with 14 points, while Mikayla Shults added eight.
