Tez Allen, Carson High boys put clamps on Panthers leads prep roundup

North Valleys came into Morse Burley Gym having put up 359 3-pointers, including 152 by 5-foot-9 point guard Jalen Meadors.

So, Carson coach Carlos Mendeguia put 6-4 Tez Allen on him. Allen blocked an early shot by Meadors, who was never a factor throughout the game, and that set the tempo for an easy 67-38 win for the Senators in a 4A crossover game.

Carson improved to 3-2 in crossover games heading into Friday night’s home game against McQueen at 7 p.m.

The Senators forced 14 turnovers leading to 20 points and held NV to a 31.5 shooting percentage. Carson also blocked seven shots unofficially.

Allen was the key defensively, because once you stop Meadors, you have contained North Valleys. Allen did a tremendous job staying in front of the NV star.

“He was on our younger Wolverine team, so I know him pretty well,” Allen said. “He’s quick with the ball, and I think my length bothered him. If he gets hot, there is no stopping him.

“I did a lot of work this summer, and I think I’m faster and quicker.”

Mendeguia was pleased with Allen’s performance.

“I think Tez’s length definitely bothered him (Meadors),” said the CHS coach. “Once Tez blocked a couple a couple of shots that got him off his game. We need Tez to guard the other team’s best player whether it’s a guard or center.

“With North Valleys, you always have to defend the arc, and I think we did a good job of hat tonight. We also got our hands on a lot of balls and got into the passing lane.”

And, the Senators’ offense was pretty good, too.

Trent Robison had eight of his 13 points in the first quarter, sparking Carson to a 15-8 advantage. Robison was aggressive, and that paid off. Four of his eight points came at the free-throw line. Robison needs to develop into the team’s No. 3 scorer and complement Allen and Jayden DeJoseph.

“Trent had some good minutes in San Diego,” Mendeguia said. “He is starting to get a feel for it.”

The Senators caught fire in the second quarter, outscoring NV, 21-9, to take a 36-17 lead into the locker room.

North Valleys’ D.J. Dennis drained two free throws 29 seconds into the period, but Carson scored 14 of the next 16 for a 29-12 lead. After a North Valleys basket, Robison started the surge with two free tosses, and Meadors turned the ball over on a double-team which led to an Allen flush at the other end. Following another score by Dennis, Allen, Robison and Geraet Rauh scored on lay-ups to make it 29-12. DeJoseph, who was quiet in the first quarter, scored five in the final two minutes.

The assault continud in the third quarter, as Carson went on a 12-3 run en route to a 48-20 lead. DeJoseph had six in the surge and Allen added a three-point play. DeJoseph would go on to finish with a team-leading 21 points.

“He got moved inside when coach put me at the point,” Allen said. “Once he starts scoring inside, he can go outside whenever he wants and get his shot.”

Cetainly the talented seniors are one of the best 1-2 punches in the area, and the Senators will need everything they can get from them as Sierra League play gets ready to start next week.

Hug edges Tigers

MINDEN — Malik Youmes (22 points) put in a layup to beat the final buzzer to lift Hug past Douglas 58-57 Tuesday night.

Hug (7-8 overall, 2-3 High Desert League) rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to win the Northern 4A crossover contest at Randy Green Court.

Douglas (3-11, 2-3 Sierra League staged a comeback of its own and took a 57-56 lead with seven unanswered points in the final 1:01, capped by Ryan Barnes’ 3-pointer with 20 seconds left.

The Hawks inbounded the ball with 3.3 seconds showing on the clock and Youmes drove the baseline for his game-winning shot.

Tre Jackson scored 14 points and Barnes 13 to lead the Tigers offensively.

Virginia City tops Coral

Colt Hess scored 19 points and Tanner Uken chipped in 14 as Virginia City knocked off Coral Academy, 63-23, Tuesday night.

Virginia City returns to action today against Loyalton.

North Valleys edges CHS in OT

The Panthers outscored Carson, 7-2, in overtime to grab a 51-46 4A crossover victory Tuesday.

Carson dropped to 1-4 in league heading into Friday’s home game against McQueen at 5:15.

This is one that got away, as the Senators failed to score in the last 3:09 of regulation and the first 3-plus minutes of the 4-minute overtime. In that span, Carson went 0-for-9 and turned the ball over four times.

“We played hard,” CHS coach Melissa Larsen said. “We just couldn’t finish shots. We missed too many lay-ups. In the fourth quarter, we turned the ball over the first four or five times down the floor. We need to be more mentally disciplined.”

North Valleys took advantage of that, tying the game at 41 with 5:03 left in regulation thanks to a 6-2 run. Carson had taken a 39-35 lead with six straight points at the end of the third quarter, including a three-point play by Lauren Lemburg.

A free throw by Abbey Paulson and a basket by Bella Kordonowy gave Carson a 44-41 lead with 3:09 left. Jada Casper tied it with a 3-pointer with about 2 1/2 minutes left. Neither team scored the rest of the regulation, though Paulson and Haley Garver both missed from close range in the final 30 seconds.

Kaylin Talonen scored four straight points to start the OT, and Carson never recovered.

Kordonowy led Carson with 16 points and Garver added 14.

Douglas pounds Hug

Madison Smalley scored 15 points and Hailey Hughes 12 Tuesday night to lead Douglas past Hug, 56-12, in a Northern 4A crossover game.

Jackson Sayre scored 25 points to lead Carson to a narrow win Tuesday afternoon, boosting the Senators’ record to 6-7.

Christian Ortega also reached double figures with 10 points.

Senators win big

RENO — Bradley Maffei scored 13 and Dougie Hostler added 12 to lead the Senators past North Valleys, 50-20, Tuesday afternoon.

The win boosted Carson’s record to 10-4.
