Prep roundup: CHS girls, Douglas teams win

RENO — Lauren Lemburg scored eight straight points at the outset of the second quarter to give Carson High the lead for the first time, and the Senators went onto score a 40-26 4A basketball win over Damonte Ranch Tuesday night,

Carson returns to action Friday at Wooster at 5:15 p.m.

“We did a much better job working together,” coach Melissa Larsen said. “We did a better job of attacking the basket instead of relying on outside shots.

“Wright hurt us inside early, and we did a better job in the second half against her.”

Damonte led 12-3 early thanks to Alexis Wright’s inside play. Carson scored 14 of the next 16 and took the lead for good.

Bella Kordonowy led Carson with 13 points and Lemburg scored 10, all in the first half. Wright, after scoring 13 in the first half, managed just six points in the final 16 minutes.

Douglas coasts to win

MINDEN — Taylynn Kizer scored 15 points and Hailey Hughes 13 to help lead Douglas to a 52-21 win at home against Wooster Tuesday night.

Douglas (3-6 league, 6-12 overall) led 13-3 after one quarter and 27-11 at halftime during a game in which the two teams combined to turn the ball over 79 times.

Kizer and Kevyn Reid connected on two 3-pointers each for Douglas in the first half. Hughes scored eight of her 13 in the second half.

Wooster dropped to 1-8 in league, 2-13 overall.

VC girls prevail

VIRGNIA CITY — The Muckers also improved to 4-0 in league with a 33-29 win over Smith Valley. Chelsea Nevin scored 15 points and Bethany Fuller added seven points for Virginia City, which hosts a huge showdown as well against Whittell at 5:15 p.m. Friday.

Dayton falls

TRUCKEE — The Dust Devils started out strong, but couldn’t maintain their momentum, losing to Truckee 46-33. Dayton led 10-4 after one quarter, but was outscored by Truckee 15-1 in the second quarter as Truckee took a 19-11 halftime lead.

“We missed way too many baskets in the paint, that was the difference tonight,” Dayton coach Kelly Frantz said. “We couldn’t finish.”

Dayton also couldn’t fully take advantage of a strong effort on the boards in which it recorded 41 rebounds. Abby Sikora had an outstanding game, going 4-of-9 from three-point range on her way to finishing with 14 points, five rebounds and two steals for the Dust Devils.

Kristina Mason had a monster game on the boards with 16 rebounds and added five points, four steals and two blocks for Dayton. Aleea McGill-Howe added six points for the Dust Devils.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Douglas rolls Colts

MINDEN — Eleven players contributed to the scoring Tuesday night as Douglas led virtually all the way en route to a 57-38 Sierra League victory.

Dalton Davis scored 14 points, including a 3-pointer at the game’s outset, to lead the balanced offense for Douglas (4-5 league, 5-13 overall).

Six players combined to score 23 points coming off the bench for the Tigers, who have now won two straight games.

Tyler Vetter led all scorers with 16, including 4 3-pointers, for Wooster (0-9, 2-18).

Douglas led 13-12 after one quarter and extended its lead to 29-19 at halftime. The Colts scored all seven of their points in the second quarter on free throws.

Ryan Barnes and Kaden Christensen connected on 3-pointers in the third quarter to help the Tigers stretch their lead to 43-30. Wooster never got any closer than 11 in the fourth.

Christensen finished with seven points.

Ply sparks Dayton to win

TRUCKEE — J.J. Ply scored 32 points and pulled down six rebounds to lead Dayton to a 53-51 3A win Tuesday night.

Dayton led by 14 entering the final period, and the final eight minutes was a free-throw shooting contest. Truckee made its shots and Dayton didn’t, making it a much closer game.

Trevor Burrows added nine points and four rebounds for Dayton.

VC boys win

VIRGINIA CITY — The Muckers improved to 4-0 in league with a 49-29 win over Smith Valley. Colt Hess scored 17 points, Tom Redican had seven points and Tanner Uken and Christian Talbot each added seven points for Virginia City, which hosts Whittell in a huge showdown at 7 p.m. Friday.

FRESHMAN BOYS BASKETBALL

Carson wins big

Carson improved to 13-5 by routing Damonte Ranch 59-31.

Dougie Hosler (3-for-3), Brian Peralta (2-for-2) and Bradley Maffei (2-for-2) combined to go 7-for-7 from three-point range.

Hosler hit back-to-back 3s to start the game on his way to scoring 10 points. Maffei had 10 points, Nate Smothers and Randy Herrera-Sanchez each had seven points, and Peralta added six points.

Carson improved to 9-8 with a 42-29 win over Damonte Ranch.

Gavin McIntosh scored 11 points, Colton Shafer had eight points and Jackson Sayre added seven points for Carson.

BOWLING

Carson rolls to win

Matt Hinton, Lily Irvin and Paxton Spence rolled personal best three-game sets to lead the Senators to a 42.5-2.5 win over North Valleys at High Sierra Bowl recently.

Carson’s next match is Saturday at Silver Strike in Gardnerville starting at 11.

Hinton had a 228 and 650, Irvin had a 227 and 620, and Spence had a PR of 253 and a 604. Dustin Floyd finished with a 225 and 643.

Rylan Fancher rolled a 198 and 568, Gabe Gabica had a 193 and 558 and Ray Ceragioli had a 202 and 542.
