Various public safety agencies will be participating in an active shooter drill at the Capitol Grounds on Wednesday.

The training will be from 5 to 10 p.m. as agencies participate in a full-scale active shooter drill. The Capitol Complex grounds and associated buildings will be closed to the public during that time.

During the exercise, the public may see an increased police presence around the Capitol, however there will be minimum disruption to the public. There will be some road closures on Musser and 5th Streets between Carson and Stewart streets.

There will be about 140 personnel participating in the event including the Offices of the Governor, Attorney General and Secretary of State, Carson City Sheriff’s Office, Carson City Fire Department, Carson City and State of Nevada Public Works, Nevada Highway Patrol, Division of Emergency Management, Department of Public Safety General Services, Nevada Legislative Police Department and Nevada Supreme Court Marshals. The event is hosted by the Department of Public Safety Capitol Police Division.

This exercise is necessary for preparedness and can be applied to many types of coordinated multi-agency incidents and disaster responses. According to the FBI, between 2000 and 2016, nationwide there were 200 reported incidents that met the criteria of an active shooter event. Six of those incidents were in Northern Nevada.

The public should be aware this is a planned event and not an actual incident.
