Helicopters from Naval Air Station Fallon’s Search and Recuse, the Longhorns, dropped thousands of gallons of water on a fire that began Thursday afternoon on Fairview Peak, 35 miles east of Fallon.
NAS Fallon spokesman Zip Upham said the fire may have been caused by tracer rounds used on the Navy range.
Initially, the Bureau of Land Management, Carson City District, responded to the incident with two engines, but once it was determined the 50-acre fire was on Navy land, Upham said BLM supported the Navy helicopters from U.S. Highway 50 by helping them get water.
Cameras on Fairview Peak reported the fire Thursday afternoon at about 2:44 p.m., and the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center notified the involved agencies.
