The Foundation for Carson City Parks & Recreation (FCCPR), is hosting an Open House and demonstration of disc golf at the historic Wungnema House located in Mills Park, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 2, 2017. The Eagle Valley Disc Golf Association (EVDGA) has been working with FCCPR and the Carson City Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Department (Parks Department) on the development of a disc golf complex on 100 acres west of Flint Drive and Rifle Range Road. This complex, at build out, will have two tournament disc golf courses and a beginner course.

EVDGA is an advocates group volunteering to design and provide labor, to construct the complex, and to maintain it. It is a true grass roots effort to provide a quality outdoor recreational facility for area residents and visitors to the Northern Nevada and California area.

FCCPR assists the Parks Department with projects for improvements to the City’s parks. Currently it is providing financial guidance and assistance to several organizations that are raising funds to make parks improvements, such as EVDGA.

FCCPR also maintains the Wungnema House under a lease agreement with the city. The house was built in 1948 by a family of Hopi stonemasons, the Wungnemas, and served as their home until the early 1970s. Notable, in addition to the house’s exterior masonry, is the inclusion of the family’s clan symbol in the rock fireplace. The Wungnema’s distinctive masonry survives in many homes and other structures in Carson City, but is also found in homes, churches, ranches, and other structures at Lake Tahoe, Washoe Valley, and Reno.

Access to the house and the disc golf demonstration is from the Seely Loop, the east entrance for Mills Park, off North Saliman Road in Carson City, Nevada.

FCCPR also will be holding a Community Service Awards ceremony on Wednesday, July 12, at 5:30 p.m. at the wall of honor at the east end of the Marv Teixeira Pavilion in Mills Park. Those honored this year are Robyn Orloff (Volunteer of the Year), Chris MacKenzie (Volunteer of the Years), Muscle Powered (Organization of the Year), and CarsonNow.org (Business of the Year). This brief outdoor ceremony will be followed by an Open House at the Wungnema House.

FCCPR is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. The mission of FCCPR is to provide an umbrella under which various organizations and citizens can come together to explore innovative ways to promote and facilitate their activities. It assists organizations with similar goals to promote and meet Foundation objectives by acting in a fiduciary capacity to help manage and protect monies raised by members for their various stated projects.

FCCPR welcomes new members and is interested in individuals who can assist with fundraising, newsletter, publicity, special events, recruitment, and park clean up. Annual membership is $25.00. For further information, call David Bugli at 775-883-4154 or visit the website http://CarsonCityParks.org.
