Anyone who attends the next Frances Humphrey Lecture at the Nevada State Museum can prepare to learn some of the history of Battle Mountain.

If you’ve ever said, “There’s nothing to do in Carson City,” Ken Beaton suggests you check into a Battle Mountain motel for three weeks one Tuesday evening. Discover the days before computers, tablets, iPhones, internet, cable, satellite dishes, DVRs, digital players, video games, NFL game day packages, or eBooks.

Beaton, a Lynn, Mass., native, will present the lecture from 6:30 to 8 p.m. July 27. The event includes a Mitch Miller sing-along to “Battle Mountain Is the Place for Me.”

Beaton spent his first five Christmases in five different states. He earned an associate’s degree from Boston University Junior College, a bachelor’s from Salem State University and a master’s from Utah State University. He taught at Battle Mountain High School from 1972-75 and in Carson City from 1975-94. His memoir, “The Bulldog Brigade: Every Day Red and Gray,” is available in print or eBook on Amazon.

Doors open at 6 p.m. The cost is $8 for adults and free for museum members and youth 17 and under.
