Nevada-SJSU Notes: Lucky 1,300 and more for Fenner

SAN JOSE, Calif. – D.J. Fenner continues to climb up the Nevada scoring chart.

Fenner scored 15 and became the 15th player in Nevada history to go over 1,300 career points in Nevada’s 82-67 victory at The Event Center.

Fenner has 1,309 for his career heading into Saturday’s MW regular-season finale against Colorado State.

The winner of the CSU-Nevada game takes the regular-season title, gets the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament and gets an automatic NIT berth should it lose at the conference event.

“It’s pretty awesome,” Fenner said of his achievement. “I didn’t know that. It’s nice to know that after being here for four years.”

ROAD SUCCESS

A big difference in Nevada’s success is its performance on the road.

Nevada went 5-10 a year ago and is 8-4 this season in true road games.

“We’re more confident,” Nevada coach Eric Musselman said. “We established homecourt advantage last year, and during the summer we talked about the next step and trying to win on the road. We are doing a better job of finishing games and getting off to good starts.”

Nevada has won its last three away games by a combined 70 points (Air Force, UNLV and San Jose State).

SENIOR NIGHT AT SJSU

The Spartans bid farewell to Brandon Mitchell, Isaac Thornton and Gary Williams Jr. Thornton and Mitchell were part of coach Dave Wojcik’s first recruiting class at SJSU.

Williams transferred in as a junior from Indian Hills Junior College. Last week at Boise State, he played just seven minutes and was 7-for-12 from the floor. The barrage helped cut a 16-point deficit down to 4. He’s averaging 7.3 a game.

Thornton, who has started 16 times this year, is averaging 4.4 points a contest, and Mitchell is at 3.3.

RAMS, BULLDOGS WIN

Colorado State knocked off Wyoming, 78-76, and Fresno State knocked off Boise State, 74-67, on Tuesday night.

The loss by Boise State knocked the Broncos all the way down to the third spot at 11-6. Boise State finishes at Air Force on Saturday afternoon.
