Soroptimist International of Carson City welcomes members of the community to its lunch meeting on Wednesday, March 22.
The club meets from noon to 1 p.m. in the north room of Glen Eagles Restaurant. Reservations are required with an optional lunch available for $16. To reserve a seat, email silismiriam@gmail.com before Monday evening.
Sarah Walker, member of Soroptimist International of Greater Las Vegas, will talk about hands-on collaborative efforts by Soroptimist clubs in Southern Nevada. Besides her Greater Las Vegas club membership, Walker is the director for Soroptimist Sierra Nevada Region’s District 6. Her district includes the four clubs in Southern Nevada as well as Northern Nevada clubs in Hawthorne, Yerington, Dayton/Virginia City, and Carson City.
One project is Dress a Girl Around the World, a campaign to bring dignity to girls in need by giving each a dress handmade and delivered in person by volunteers. The goal is to provide new dresses to present an appearance that the girl is well cared for to discourage would-be predators. The Dress a Girl label attached to the outside of each dress sends an additional message that each girl is under the care of an organization, giving her added protection from those who would harm her, predators or traffickers. Dress designs are simple, and there are options for even non-sewers to get involved. For information about the program, go to www.dressagirlaroundtheworld.com.
The other project deals with recycling plastic grocery bags into sleeping mats for the homeless. The sturdy, yet lightweight, mats are easy to carry, provide waterproof insulation from the cold ground, and are a useful alternative to the landfill for the ubiquitous bags.
