Prep Roundup: Carson High baseball falls; Dayton’s Ply clears 6-10

Carson High scored two runs in the first inning, but the bats went silent over the last five innings, enabling Spanish Springs to grab a 4-2 4A victory Saturday morning at Ron McNutt Field.

The loss drops Carson to 1-2 in league play entering its two-game series against Reed.

Spanish Springs opened the scoring in the first with a single run on Josh Prizina’s sacrifice fly.

Carson came back in the bottom of the inning when Landon Truesdale singled and moved to second on an error. Truesdale moved to third on Jesse Lopez’s sacrifice bunt . Bryce Moyle reached on a catcher interference call to load the bases. Jace Keema walked, forcing home a run, and Trevor Edis’ infield out scored Abel Carter.

Singles by Conor Culp and Prizina gave the Cougars a 3-2 lead. A passed ball in the sixth made it 4-2.

Edis went 2-for-3 for Carson, while Truesdale and Luke Myers had a hit apiece.

Jordan Santos went 6.1 innings on the mound to pick up the win. Derek Schafer took the loss for CHS.

Carson coach Bryan Manoukian said Santos kept his team off balance.

“We hit a lot of weak ground balls and fly balls because we were out in front,” Manoukian said. “We have to do a better of staying within ourselves with regards to our approach.

“Ben (Nelson) and Derek (Schafer) did an outstanding job today. They kept us in the ballgame.”

Schafer threw four innings, allowing three runs and three hits, while Nelson gave up one earned run in three innings.

Dayton splits

ELKO — Dayton settled for a split of a doubleheader after losing a wild nightcap 19-18. The Dust Devils scored four runs in the seventh to break a 2-2 tie on their way to a 6-2 win in the opener.

Jesse Schmidt had a huge day for Dayton, going 3-for-4 with five RBI. He drove in runs with a double in the third and a home run in the seventh. Dylan Baker pitched a complete game for the win, allowing just one earned run on three hits.

In the nightcap, Elko score the game-winning run on a walk in the botttom of the seventh to break an 18-18 tie after Dayton fought back from a 10-2 deficit. Dayton scored 16 unearned runs, five in the fourth, six in the fifth and five in the sixth to take an 18-10 lead. But Elko scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score 18-18.

Brandon Little, Jesse Schmidt and Justin Schmidt all had hits to spark the rally in the fourth and Trevor Burrows and Baker had hits to spark the rally in the fifth. Jesse and Justin Schmidt and Baker all doubled and Zch Woitas had a hit to spark the rally in the sixth.

Jesse Schmidt, Woitas, Baker, and Justin Schmidt each had multiple hits. Woitas and Justin Schmidt each had three hits.

Carson meet

McQueen won both the boys and girls meet, outlasting Douglas and Carson Saturday morning at the Jim Frank Track Complex.

For Carson’s boys, Harry Meyer won the 110 hurdles in 16.66 and Blaise Bonomo PRd in the discus with a 119-foot effort.

Greg Wallace won the high jump in 5-8 and Dylan Mayo won the triple jump with a leap of 43-8 1/2.

Mayo was second in the long jump of 19-2 3/4 and the high jump at 5-6. Brandon Basa PRd in the 400 with a 52.40 en route to a second-place finish. Ben Granados was second in the 100 (11.76), third in the long jump (18-8 1/4) and fourth in the 200 (24.89). Freshman Zach Sever was third in the 3200 at 11:49.3.

For the CHS girls, Valerie Sue Meyer won the 400 in 61.33 and placed third in the 100 (13.54). Abbey Paulson won the triple jump with a mark of 32-2, Dajarrah Navarro won the high jump at 4-10, Gabriela Lopez won the 1600 in 5:36.07, and Abigail Pradere won the 800 in 2:19.94.

Azlynn McFadden threw 30-5 in the shot and 97-3 in the discus en route to second and third-place finishes, respectively. Anya Woodbury was second in the triple jump at 31-9 1/2. Makenzie McDaniel was second in the discus at 98-11. Erica Basa was third in the triple jump at 30-9 3/4and Jaidyn Shepard was third in the 400 at 65.79.

Ply shines at Yerington

YERINGTON – Dayton’s J.J. Ply put on a show Saturday at the Yerington Relays.

Ply won three events — high jump, 800 and 110 hurdles.

He set a school record with a 6-10 effort in the high jump and registered a PR in the 800 with a time of 2-minutes 10-seconds, and he won the 110 hurdles in 15:50.

He was third in the pole vault at 11-feet.

David Delfin was third in the discus with a PR of 124 feet. Carson Crosby was sixth in the 100 with a 12.29. James Logan was ninth in the 1600 at 5:20.95.

On the girls side, Ashley Mason was third in the long jump (14-8 3/4), third in the triple jump (31-7), and she ran a leg on Dayton’s 800 relay squad (1:54.54). She also ran a leg on the third-place 1600 relay team (4:42.27).

Mackenzie Montero was fourth in the discus (78-4 ) and fourth in the shot (28-0). She also high jumped 4-8.

Rebecca Mason, Macie Callan and Sydney Strickler were on the 800 relay group. The Masons, Grace Wells and Strickler ran in the 1600 relay.

SOFTBALL

Spanish Springs sweeps CHS

SPARKS — Northern 4A power Spanish Springs swept a doubleheader from Carson, winning 11-1 and 13-2.

Carson took a 1-0 lead in both games before Spanish Springs took control. In the opening 11-1 loss, Kassidy Cooley drove home Carson’s only run in the first. Camryn Quilling, Kailee Luschar, Nicole Brown, and Jailene Salceido all had one hit for the Senators.

In the nightcap, Bella Kordonowy’s RBI sacrifice fly gave CHS a 1-0 lead in the first. Nicole Brown drove in Carson’s other run.

Dayton girls drop three

ELKO – Dayton dropped its 3A softball opener, 9-7, Friday afternoon.

Caleigh Onstott went 2-for-4 with a double, Aleea Howe went 1-for-3 with a run-scoring double, Julie Rogacs tripled and scored a run, and Amanda Woitas added a single. Tamia Powell scored three times and Elizabeth Vincent had a single.

Onstott took the loss in the circle. She allowed seven hits and struck out four.

The Dust Devils then dropped both ends of Saturday’s doubleheader, losing 8-6 in the opener and 6-5 in the nightcap.

In the first game on Saturday, Woitas hit two homers to lead the Dust Devils, and Rogacs had two singles. Bri Hill drove in three runs.

In the second game, Sydney Anderson went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Rogacs went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Onstott went 3-for-3. “The girls never gave up,”coach Dusti Houk said. “I’m proud of them for their fight. We just need to play a clean game.”

Houk was referring to Saturday’s first game when her team made six errors.

Dayton hosts Spring Creek next weekend.
