A California man pleaded guilty Monday in Lyon County District Court to one count of Driving Under the Influence of a controlled substance that caused the death of another motorist south of Fernley in December.

Stephen Murray, 54, of Alta, Calif., was handed a prison sentence of 6 to 20 years in the Nevada Dept. of Corrections for the death of 25-year-old Stephen Johnson of Silver Springs.

A three-vehicle crash south of Fernley killed Johnson on Dec. 14, 2016, while another person was flown to Reno on Care Flight.

The Nevada Highway Patrol said the crash occurred near Cottonwood Lane on U.S. 50 Alternate.

Troopers said a witness reported Murray had driven his Mercedes into the oncoming lane and hit a Honda Civic head-on. The NHP said Johnson, who was driving the Honda, was killed. A third vehicle sustained damage from debris from the crash.

Murray was taken to Renown Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries as a result of the crash.

After he was released from the Reno hospital, Murray was booked into Lyon County Jail for DUI-drugs with death, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana and driving left of center.

The NHP said the driver was taken by Care Flight to Renown Regional Medical Center in serious condition after the crash. The NHP does not have an updated status.

Two children were also in the vehicle and they were not seriously injured.

The NHP closed U.S. 50A for about an hour while they evacuated the injured driver and cleared the scene.
