St. Patrick’s Day letter inaccurate
Challenging Thane Cornell’s statement: “corned beef and cabbage was a traditional meal served on Easter Sunday,” is bogus.
Corned beef and cabbage was a distinctly Irish-American dish. It was created in the U.S. during the 19th century.
My mother, who was born in Limerick, told me that they had never heard of corned beef. If any meat were available, it would be sheep, and the poorest cut at that. Or perhaps the exceedingly rare chicken.
Only the “landed gentry” were able to afford real meat.
