Old house, new hands: The Halfway House, situated at the toll gate of Devil’s Gate Turnpike, has changed hands. Mr. Jacob Allenbach, late of Muller’s Hotel, has become its presiding genius. Jake will make the Half-way House a popular resort.

Runaway: George Oliver’s large horse came galloping down the street with part of his harness hanging to him. He wandered on the sidewalk, frightening women and children. He ran foul of “Baldy,” Sweeney’s trotter knocked down signs and awning posts. He ran past the depot and circling round the town in ten minutes came down the street on the same course. He ran into Circe’s trotter and seemed to run into the freight train below the Mint. When last heard of he was heading for the Hot Springs.

Snow slide: A snow slide occurred above the Golden Gate mine on the west side of Antelope Valley completely demolishing the ten-stamp mill, boarding house and blacksmith shop. The mill is completely wrecked. (Virginia Enterprise)

Salary schedules adopted: A salary scale that will affect teachers in Carson City schools was adopted according to Supt. Donald Robertson. The minimum beginning salary is $2,400 per year. Maximum salary will be $4,000 per year.

50 Years Ago

Howard Hughes donation: Howard Hughes will donate up to $6 million to the state for a medical school. According to a letter to Gov. Paul Laxalt, the mysterious Hughes said he would contribute $200,000 to $300,000 each year for 20 years.

Photo caption: Up with People — Up with People performed ‘The Festival’ at the Carson City Convention Center, Bob Boldrick Theatre. The more than 100 performers include instrumentalists, singers, and dancers, and cast members from various parts of the world. Up with People, a nonprofit, non-denominational group, is described as young people who act as “ambassadors of good will.”
