First of the season: S. Abraham and son opened an ice cream and soda water saloon on Carson street. Signs were printed at the Appeal office and put up by them — directing thirsty and weary ladies and gentlemen to their fountain and easy chairs.

May & Co.: The undersigned will supply families with produce and fruits delivered at Sacramento: peas: 6 cents; asparagus: 5 cents; rhubarb: 8 cents; artichokes: 40 cents; new potatoes: 4 cents; lettuce: 15 cents a dozen; green onions: 15 cents a dozen; nice oranges: 20 cents a dozen; bananas: 20 cents a dozen; and strawberries: 15 cents a pound.

Recovered treasure: A Tonopah dispatch says a ton of ore taken from the Mizpah mine has been discovered in a cabin near the red-light district. Three men are under arrest and charged with high grading.

World War I: To make the day a memorable one, Secretary Baker urged the states to cooperate with the federal government and urged the states to make the day named for nationwide conscription registration a “great national demonstration of patriotism,” and a “national festival occasion.” The house passed the $2,500,000,000 army and navy appropriation, the largest in history.

50 Years Ago
