Gov. Brian Sandoval appointed Oasis Academy junior Hunter Drost to the Nevada State Board of Education, and Judge Thomas L. Stockard swore in Drost on Wednesday at the school.

Drost will be the only youth serving on the board as a non-voting member and will travel to meetings including those in Las Vegas.

The newest board member said he submitted his application in February to take a chance on the opportunity and have some input in what he wanted to see in education. The first round eliminated the student council candidates down to three, then the Nevada Youth Legislature selected the top two — then the governor chose Drost.

“I’ve always sort of had an interest in politics,” he said. “That’s actually what I plan to do.

Drost added he loves student council and said he had hoped he would be able to do more of what he loved as well as hopefully serve the state of Nevada.

The student’s term will run June 1-May 31, 2018.

“It is a really big deal, very competitive,” said Oasis Principal Melissa Mackedon.

Drost said he wanted to thank Oasis and his student council adviser, Jennifer Mortensen.
