Toys For Tots is among many ways local residents can give back this hoiday season.
The chance to make the holidays brighter for those in need is being offered thanks to the following businesses, nonprofits and organizations:
Capitol Cab is holding its annual fundraiser to benefit Toys for Tots. Cash and toys will be collected through Dec. 20. To help, simply give a Capitol Cab driver donations of cash or new and unwrapped toys, or drop them at the Ron Wood Family Resource Center, 2621 Northgate Lane. The Dayton Urgent Care is collecting coats, gloves and hats for children in need. Donations can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends. The clinic is at 901 Medical Center Drive in Dayton.
Evergreen Gene’s, 1811 N. Carson St., is collecting donations for the Do Drop In center through Jan. 7. Anything for the homeless including, gloves, socks, scarves, nonperishable foods, coats and toiletries are welcome. The garden center has been a supporter of the Do Drop In center for eight years to help improve the lives of local homeless. Call Gene or Rowena at 8775-82-1807 for information.
To help boost donations to local food banks, the annual Holiday Give. Share. CARE! drive offers Save Mart and FoodMaxx customers the chance to donate $2 to $5 at checkout. The tax-deductible contributions will be noted on the receipt. All donations go to the local food bank assigned to each store. In Carson City, FoodMaxx is at 3325 Highway 50 E. Save Mart is at 4348 S. Carson St., and 3620 N. Carson St.
For the 23rd year, Douglas Disposal employees will be collecting nonperishable food through Dec. 8. To help, place donations into plastic bags and place them beside trash cans during collection week. The food will be weighed and delivered to the Carson Valley Community Food Closet. Donations also can be delivered to Douglas Disposal, 1653 N. Lucerne St., Suite A, or the Douglass County Transfer Station, 902 Dump Road. For information, call 775-782-5713.
Smith’s Food and Drug is again offering customers a convenient way to help others with its Bringing Hope To the Table donation drive. Through Dec. 31, customers can add a $1, $5 or $10 donation to their grocery orders. All contributions will be converted into Smith’s gift cards for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada.
Families who need toys for Christmas can sign up to receive them through Dec. 22. The Toys for Tots hotline, 775-600-3861, operates from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. Spanish speakers can call 775-600-3428. For information, call Joyce Buckingham at 775-884-2269.
The local Salvation Army is expecting to help more than 3,000 low-income people this holiday season with Angel Tree toys for kids, food baskets for families, utility and rental assistance and other dire needs for those in need. For information, call 775-887-9120.
Through Dec. 15, Carson City Hyundai is donating $50 for new and $20 per used vehicle sold to two programs: The Angel Tree program and Food For Thought. Food For Thought provides food for kids who are less fortunate and don’t have food over the weekend.
