Douglas High boys win, girls lose against McQueen

MINDEN — Twelve players scored on Tuesday night as the Douglas High boys basketball team cruised to a 70-42 season-opening win against McQueen.

Douglas took a 16-10 first quarter lead and never looked back on its way to the Northern 4A cross-over win at Randy Green Court.

Ian Ozolins scored 14 points and Hunter Morris added 13 to lead the balanced Douglas attack. Morris, a 6-foot-8 junior, grabbed six rebounds and blocked four shots (all in the first half) coming off the bench.

Ozolins, a 6-4 senior, converted 10 of 12 free throws and Douglas shot 16-for-20 from the line as a team.

The Tigers play again Thursday in a 12:30 p.m. game against Folsom, Calif., at Bishop Manogue’s Wild West Shootout in Reno.


McQueen girls top Douglas, 43-27

MINDEN — Kaila Spevak scored 11 of her game-high 19 points in the first quarter to put the McQueen High girls basketball team on track to a 43-27 season-opening win against Douglas on Tuesday.

Spevak knocked down three 3-pointers as the Lancers surged to an 18-6 lead in the opening two minutes of the Northern 4A cross-over contest.

Douglas pulled to within 31-26 with 5:48 left to play, only to see the Lancers take off on a 12-1 run to close out the game.

Ashlyn Campbell and Hannah Carr scored 10 points each to lead the Tigers. Campbell converted two 3-pointers and her shot from the top of the key brought Douglas to within five points in the fourth quarter.

Kaelei Koenig had 13 points and 10 rebounds for McQueen. She had six points and five rebounds in the fourth quarter.
