WNC offering community education courses

With the goal of enriching the cultural, social and recreation life of the Fallon area, Western Nevada College is offering the following classes through its Community Education Division:

Amateur Astronomy Series: NASA and the Planets — 7-9 p.m. Nov. 29. Discussion on the major astronomy and NASA events. Hunt for Neptune, Uranus, and other deep space objects, weather permitting. Cost: $46.

Seasonal Crafts: Christmas Cookie Cutter Wreath — 5:45-7:45 p.m. Nov. 30. Just in time for Christmas, come create an adorable Christmas cookie cutter wreath! Cost: $30 plus $20 supply fee payable to instructor day of class.

Safe Sitter Baby-sitting Certification — 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Dec. 2. A six-and-a-half hour course that covers all four areas of the curriculum: Safety Skills, Child Care Skills, First Aid and Rescue Skills, and Life and Business Skills; with an additional hour of CPR instruction and manikin practice. Students will need to bring a sack lunch. Cost: $65.

Comprehensive Microsoft PowerPoint — 6-9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays beginning Dec. 4. Learn to effectively plan and create a professional presentation using all the tools in Microsoft PowerPoint. Cost: $150.

Self-Defense — 6-9 p.m. Dec. 5. Improve your awareness, build your confidence, and increase your knowledge on how to defend yourself. Cost: $50.

Seasonal Crafts: Tomato Cage Snowman — 5:45-7:45 p.m. Dec. 7. Bring Frosty the Snowman to life all winter with this clever snowman made out of a tomato cage. This is a great way to re-purpose a summer gardening implement into a winter decoration. Cost: $30 plus $15 supply fee payable to instructor day of class.

Poetry and Watercolor — 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Dec. 9. Students will be taught some basic watercolor and pen and ink techniques to accompany poetry they will create. Carol Braniff will be introducing the poetry technique, and Lori Bishop, the art. No previous art skills are required. This class will be modeled on the style of Brian Andreas; very whimsical, poignant and often humorous! All supplies will be provided. Cost: $50.

The goal of the Community Education Division is to respond to community needs for lifelong learning opportunities. The program is self-supporting and doesn’t receive state funds to sponsor its classes and workshops. The events are funded entirely by student fees. Classes are offered for no credit and with no final grade assigned.
