Putting up a storm

The Lady Wave golf team has been doing well this season, ranging in the middle of the pack in its last few tournaments.

The Wave finished fifth in Elko, Spring Creek and Dayton, but moved to fourth in Truckee. They had a team score of 477 in Elko, 483 in Spring Creek, 467 in Truckee and 517 in Dayton.

In Dayton, last week, Allie Lister led the team with a score of 112 while Hannah Evans was right behind her with 116. Kim Park scored 136 and Glenda Lee finished with 153.

When the team played in Truckee, Lister scored 109, Evans 119 and Park 124; Kaitlin Hunter scored 115. In Spring Creek, Lister scored 120, Evans 128, Hunter 118, Park 117 and Julianne Celik 128. In Elko, Lister and Evans both scored 116, Hunter 119, Park 126 and Celik 128.

The team was scheduled to compete at a tournament in South Tahoe, however weather prevented them playing. Coach Sandy Vanderbeek said lightning and rain pulled the players from the course. She added the game will be made up at their tournament in Winnemucca next week.

Vanderbeek said they are about half way through the season at this point. She said everyone on the team is a hard worker and some of the players are climbing the ranks to be leaders. The coach added it’s been rough for them since there have been several back-to-back tournaments taking them out of town overnight.

“They’ve ended up missing a lot of school, but they’ve handled it well,” she said. “I like my team, they’re hard workers.”

Lister said the season has been going well; she said they’ve been working to bring their scores down and place higher. She added she’s excited for the possibility of going back to state and facing an all-new set of competitors.

Vanderbeek said the team is settling into their scores. She noted Lister has been a regular leader and it speaks to how she practices. So far, two members of the team are looking on track to qualify for state with the coach hoping for a third. As a group, the team has regularly been scoring under 500.

“We’ve been under 500 as a team, which has been a nice goal,” Vanderbeek said.

The golf team’s next tournament is Oct. 4-5 at the golf course in Winnemucca. They played in Dayton on Tuesday, though results were unavailable at press time; Vanderbeek said she expected it to be a good tournament on a tough course with lots of hazards.
