Prep Roundup: Carson High teams second at track meet

McQueen High swept the Northern 4A meet against Carson and Hug on Tuesday at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex.

McQueen won the boys meet with 80 points. Carson and Hug were at 46 and 41, respectively. Sierra Lutheran and Mineral County also competed, scoring five and three points, respectively.

The Lancers’ girls won with 103 points. Carson was second with 60 and Hug was third with 15.

Gabe Gabica (pole vault, 12-1), Hunter Rauh (1600, 4:59.63) and Dallin Schafer (discus, 119-0) were Carson’s individual winners. The Carson quartet of Rauh, Gryphon Matthies, Chance Smith and Darryll Heyward clocked a 4:28.14 to win the 1600 relay.

Smith was second in the 400 (53.46), Schafer was second in the shot (36-2 1/2), Ethan Byasse was second in the 800 (2:11.77), and Jayson Legott was second in the 1600 (5:05.06). The Carson 800 relay squad was second in 1:36.79.

Gurjant Mand was third in the shot at 35-11, Eli Keechler was third in the discus at 108-2, Zach Sever was third in the 800 at 2:17.41, Andrew Ingram was third in the 3200 (12:15.75) and Paxton Spence was third in the 1600 in 5:19.05.

Sierra Lutheran’s Teagan Hansen won the 3200 in 10:35.46.

On the girls side, Abigail Pradere won the 400 (60.45), Rheanna Jackson won the 800 (2:27.21), Amanda Schulz won the discus at 94-feet and Gabriela Fernandez won the 1600 (5:55.19). The 1600 relay group of Pradere, Jackson, Ashley Britt and Annika Wick won the 1600 in 4:14.30.

Britt was second in the 300 hurdles (50.28), Alyssa Rowe was second in the shot (32-4), Chloe Hataway was second in the 1600 (6:45.47), Taryn Encinas was second in the high jump at 4-4 and Makenzie McDaniel was second in the discus at 87-9. Carson was second in the 800 relay (1:55.34) and the 400 relay (55.16).

Blanca Sosa was third in the 400 (63.96), Alyssa Lucas was third in the high jump at 4-2 and third in the triple jump at 28-6, and Chloe Wait finished third in the pole vault at 6-6,

BASEBALL

CHS completes sweep of North Valleys

RENO — Carson High used the long ball to complete a sweep of North Valleys on Tuesday.

Teigen Key blasted two homers, Abel Carter hit one and Delsin Roberts drove in three runs to lead the Senators to a 14-10 triumph.

The Senators, who started the Northern 4A season 0-2, have won six of their last eight, including sweeps of North Valleys and Hug and splits with Spanish Springs and Reed. Carson visits McQueen on Thursday at 3:45 p.m.

Carson rolled to an 11-0 lead in its first four at-bats before the Panthers stormed back with five runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Carter opened the game with a double and scored on a single by Joe Tonino. Kahle Good followed with a single, sending Tonino to third. A balk scored the second and final run of the inning.

The Senators added two more in the second when Roberts walked and scored on the first of two Key homers. Carson extended its lead to 7-0 in the third when Barnard singled and moved to third on Landon Truesdale’s double. Both runners scored on a double by Roberts. A balk moved Roberts to third and he scored on Buchan’s infield out.

Key finished 3-for-4 with four RBI and Truesdale went 3 for 5 and drove in a run. Carter, Tonino and Good all had two hits.

Carson used three pitchers — Colby Zemp, Quinn Overland and Kyle Glanzmann, who was the most effective. He allowed a run and two hits in 1.2 innings.

Fernley wins series vs. Dayton

The Dust Devils and Vaqueros split their Monday makeup doubleheader.

Dayton won the opener, 6-0, and Fernley took the nightcap, 8-0.

Isaac Von Schoff allowed just three hits and fanned 11 in the opener. Justin Schmidt and Jake Madson had two hits apiece. Dayton scored two in the first, sixth and seventh innings.

Dayton managed just three hits off Mason Timbrook in the second game, one each by Trevor Burrows, Zach Woitas and Von Schoff.

On Tuesday, Fernley scored six runs in the sixth to register an 11-7 come-from-behind victory. Five Dayton errors led to five unearned runs.

Woitas went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI and Burrows went 3-for-3 with two RBI, including two solo homers. Schmidt had a two-run homer.

Falcons win big

GARDNERVILLE — Zane Warkentin scored four times to lead Sierra Lutheran to a 14-4 win over Whittell on Tuesday afternoon at Lampe Park.

Michael Davis, Seth Houghton and Zac Houghton combined to fan nine hitters.

The teams play a doubleheader on Friday.

SOFTBALL

Fernley sweeps Dayton

FERNLEY — The Vaqueros scored 12 runs in the fifth inning to overcome a 4-2 deficit and grab a 14-4 mercy rule win on Tuesday.

Dayton led 4-2 after one inning, as Julie Rogacs stroked a three-run homer and Elizabeth Vincent drove in a run.

Fernley’s 12-run inning was keyed by a Reese Jones grand slam. Jones went 3-for-3 and drove in five runs on the day.
