Prep Roundup: Manogue sweeps Carson baseball

Steve Nelms, Carson High’s first-year head track coach, was a happy man at the end of Saturday’s Carson High Invite.

Including Friday’s JV competitions, Carson High athletes achieved an impressive 63 personal bests, 32 at the JV meet and 31 at the varsity meet.

“That is fantastic,” Nelms said. “Our kids are really buying in and getting better each meet. That is all we can ask. They are getting ready to peak at the perfect time.”

The Carson boys were fourth with 130 points, Sierra Lutheran was sixth with 70 points and Dayton was 16th with 12 points. Reed won the boys meet with 326, far ahead of Las Vegas power Bishop Gorman at 252.

The Carson girls were sixth at 114 points. Dayton was eighth at 107 and Sierra Lutheran was 14th with 16 points.

Hunter Rauh turned in Carson’s only individual win with a PR of 2:01.91 in the 800. Gabe Gabica was second in the pole vault with a lifetime best of 13-6. The 1600 relay quartet of Darryll Heyward, Dominic Martinez, Chance Smith and Rauh clocked a 3:36.80. The Senators’ 800 relay group of Tucker Nichols, Chance Hannah, Smith and Ben Granados were third in 1:32.50. Carson’s 400 relay of Gilbert Polanco, Misrael Becerra, Nichols and Granados were fourth in 45.53. Smith was fourth in the high jump at 5-6, and Granados PRd at 11.2 in the 100 en route to a fifth-place finish.

For Sirra Lutheran, Jared Marchegger won the 3200 in 10:08.01 and was second in the 1600 at 4:34.51. Peyton Hedwall was third in the shot at 47-8 3/4, Teagan Hansen was fourth in the 3200 at 10:35.39 and Grant Goins tied for fourth in the high jump at 5-6

Dayton was led by Jeff Walker, who was fifth in the pole vault with a PR of 12-6 and he was 12th in the 300 hurdles in 44.31

The Carson girls, with Abigail Pradere away on a club volleyball tournament, failed to win an event, but had plenty of other good performances. Rheanna Jackson PR’d in both the 800 (2:24.40) and the 1600 (5:18.91) en route to a third and fourth, respectively. Ashley Britt was third in the 300 hurdles with a season-best 48.26 and fourth in the 100 hurdles with a lifetime best of 17.25. Alyssa Rowe was third in the shot at 33-8 3/4. The 800 relay team of Taryn Encinas, Annelise Poor, Britt and Annika Wick was second in 1:50.72. The 1600 quartet of Jackson, Blanca Sosa, Britt and Wick was second in 4:11.37. Sosa was fifth in the 800 at 2:27.86

Dayton’s girls had a tremendous day. Ashley Mason set a school record in the long jump of 17-0 1/4, breaking the 2001 mark of 16-10 1/4 held by Kim Wilson. She also PRd in the triple jump at 35-11 1/4

Rebecca Mason was third in the high jump at 4-10 and fifth in the 400 with a PR of 62.56. The 800 relay quartet of the Masons, Sydney Stricker and Macie Callan set a school record of 1:47.57. Callan was eighth in the 200 and ninth in the 400. The Dust Devils’ 3200 relay quartet of Kaeli Barwig, Hannah Coltrin, Faith Reed and Emma Housser was fifth in 12:07.19

Sierra Lutheran’s best finish was an eighth by Taylor Davison in the 3200 (14:28.51).

JV TRACK INVITE

Reed sweeps at Carson meet

Reed won the boys and girls championship at the annual Carson JV Invite Friday at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex.

The Reed boys had 152 points, well ahead of second-place Carson at 64. Sierra Lutheran was third at 62.5. On the girls side, Reed had 187.75, well ahead of McQueen at 67.75. Carson was fourth at 49.75 and Sierra Lutheran was 12th at 17.

Jacob Crossman was the only CHS boys winner, taking the 400 in 55.57. Jakob Heller was second in the 300 hurdles in a PR of 44.07 and third in the 110 hurdles in a personal-best time of 17.65. Parker Lehmann was second in the 800 at 2:13.39 and third in the 1600 at 4:57.53, a personal best. Dominic Martinez was third in the long jump at 18-2 3Ž4.

Annika Wick won the 400 in a season-best 62.98 and she was second in the 100 with a PR of 13.58. The 400 relay group was third in 59.43 and the 800 relay was third in 2:05.9. Taryn Encinas was fourth in the high jump at 4-6.

The Sierra Lutheran boys were led by Teagan Hansen, who won the 3200 in 10:53.08 and was second in the 1600 in a PR of 4:56.18. Johannes Lamprecht was second in the high jump at 5-10. Caleb Contreras was fourth in the 400 in 56.87 and fifth in the 800 in 2:17.35. Shawn Emm and Teagan Berger were third and fifth, respectively, in the triple jump. The Falcons’ 800 relay quartet was second in 1:42.00.

Mikayla Talkington won the shot put with a throw of 29-10, a career best, and she was fifth in the discus with a PR of 72-8.

BASEBALL

Manogue sweeps Carson

RENO – Ryan Charles blanked Carson on three hits, and Josh Rolling hit a two-run double in the third to lead Manogue to a 4-0 win in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader.

Charles threw just 86 pitches, as Carson extended its scoreless inning streak to 15 straight innings dating back to the seventh inning of the first game against Galena on Tuesday.

Teigen Key went 2-for-2 and Abel Carter 1-for-3 for the Senators, who never got a runner to third the entire game.

In the second game, Carson lost 3-2 despite a nice pitching performance by Avery Powell, who allowed just six hits. Rolling picked up the win for the Miners.

Carson took a 1-0 lead in the second when Key reached on catcher’s interference, and Carter drove in the run with a sacrifice fly.

Bishop Manogue took a 3-1 lead with two in the third and one in the fourth.

Carson cut the lead to 3-2 in the seventh when Carter doubled and eventually scored on an infield out by Landon Truesdale.

Carter went 2-for-3, while Kobe Morgan, Colby Zemp and Kahle Good had one hit apiece.

Damonte Ranch takes 2 from Douglas

Zack Jensen tripled to lead off an eighth inning rally that lifted Damonte Ranch to a 5-2 victory and sweep of its Northern 4A doubleheader over Douglas Saturday in Minden.

Coupled with its 14-1 win in game one, Damonte Ranch (12-4 conference, 18-8) remained in a three-way tie for second-place.

Douglas (5-11, 7-14) bounced back after being held to one hit in the opener. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Blake Murray drew a leadoff walk and came home on Elijah Hinojosa’s single to right field.

Damonte Ranch scored twice in the sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Tigers answered in the bottom half of the inning when Jayden Foster hit a two-out double and scored on Ayden Murphy’s line drive single to center field.

Foster pitched five-hit ball over seven innings for Douglas, however, the Mustangs got untracked with five hits in the eighth. Jensen lined his triple to center and scored the go-ahead run on Jerry Thomas’ infield groundout. Esteban Lopez followed with a single, Mike Nicholas doubled to left, Jacob Bercovich hit an RBI single up the middle and Hunter Dunithan added a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 5-2.

Tyler Hopper pitched four-hit ball over seven innings to secure the win and Everett Williams came on to retire the side in order in the eighth to earn credit for a save.

Douglas faces Wooster on Wednesday in a 4 p.m. game at Greater Nevada Field in Reno.

Sierra Lutheran sweeps

COLEVILLE — Sierra Lutheran rolled to a sweep at Coleville, winning the opener 17-2 and the nightcap 16-6 on Friday.

In the opener, Michael Davis pitched a complete game, throwing 69 pitches over five innings and striking out nine. Alex Bernhard was 2-for-2 with a double, triple and four RBI for the Falcons.

In the nightcap, Seth Houghton went 2-for-2 with two doubles and five RBI, Rob Sciacca went 2-for-2 and Nathan Kechely pitched two scoreless innings.

“I really like where we are at mentally right now,” Sierra Lutheran coach Howard Houghton said. “The guys out there having fun and encouraging one another as a team. It has been great to see it reflected in their play. We look forward to playing Virginia City next week.”

SOFTBALL

Damonte rallies against Douglas

Damonte Ranch pushed across three runs in the sixth inning to pull out a come-from-behind 3-2 win at Douglas on Saturday.

The Tigers won the opener, 10-1, aided by home runs from Alyssa Smokey and Bailey Walter.

Douglas (10-5 conference, 16-8-1 overall) is in the thick of a close race for second-place in the Northern 4A in which one game now separates Bishop Manogue, Reed, Douglas and Carson. Damonte Ranch (6-5, 10-7) is sixth in the standings.
