Prep Roundup: Douglas High baseball tops Wooster after 24-hour delay

MINDEN — Picking up right where they had left off one day before, the Douglas Tigers pushed across seven runs in the third inning and went on to a 12-2 Northern 4A baseball win against Wooster on Friday afternoon.

By winning the game that was suspended due to rain on Thursday, Douglas (7-11, 9-14) gained sole possession of eighth-place in the conference playoff race, one game ahead of Carson.

Wooster (3-15, 4-19) led 2-1 and Douglas had one runner on base and one out when play resumed. Sean Dunkelman and Jayden Foster drew walks to load the bases, Blake Murray lined a full-count pitch over shortstop for a two-run single then Ayden Murphy’s fly ball fell down the left field line for another two-run single.

The Tigers added three runs in the fourth inning and then closed out the game with two outs in the bottom of the sixth when Andrew Rangel hit a two-run single to center field.

Rangel pitched four scoreless innings to pick up the win. The junior right-hander allowed two hits and one walk.

The Tigers visit Galena for a double header today, then wrap up their regular season with two games against Carson, Wednesday (7 p.m.) at Ron McNutt Field and Thursday (3:45 p.m.) at Tiger Field.

Dayton sweeps Sparks

DAYTON — The Dust Devils had an easy time against the Railroaders, winning 15-0 in a 3-inning first game, and following up with a 12-0 five-inning victory.

Trevor Burrows threw a three-inning no-hitter in the opener, striking out five and throwing just 33 pitches.

Burrows helped himself at the plate with a homer and two RBI.

Isaac Von Schoff and Tyler Stolfich each went 3-for-3. Stolfich drove in three runs and Von Schoff two. Justin Schmidt went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI. Zach Woitas and Jake Madson had two hits apiece.

Von Schoff threw a three-hitter in the nightcap, striking out 11 and issuing just one walk.

Dayton scored one in the first and then put the game out of reach with six in the fourth.

Josh Pasasouk, Colin Winebarger, Victor Lozano, Burrows and Micah Woodruff all had RBIs in the fourth.

Schmidt homered for Dayton. Von Schoff and Woitas had two hits apiece.

The teams conclude their three-game series with a single game at 11 Saturday.

Muckers sweep Falcons

VIRGINIA CITY — Virginia City swept Friday’s Northern 1A doubleheader against Sierra Lutheran, winning 5-4 in nine innings in the opener, and 3-1 in the nightcap.

Zane Warkentin went 3-for-4 and scored two runs to lead Sierra Lutheran. Rocky DiMartino drove in two runs in the fifth to give the Falcons a 4-2 lead. The Muckers tied it in the seventh, and then won it thanks to an error in the ninth.

Alex Bernhard went 1-for-3 with a double to lead the Falcons.

“We will look forward to our next series against Smith Valley, and we hope to come out and finish the season well,” assistant coach Brandon Neal said.

Carson JV boys 5th

SPARKS — Led by Parker Lehmann and Jakob Heller, Carson’s JV boys finished fifth at the Northern 4A JV Championship on Friday at Reed High.

The Carson girls, led by Mia Olmos’ win in the high jump with a mark of 4-8 and a fifth and sixth by Alyssa Lucas in the high jump (4-6) and long jump (14-1), finished sixth in the team standings.

Lehmann won the 1600 in 4:57.6 and was sixth in the 3200 at 11:21.99. Heller was third in the 110 high hurdles (17.67) and third in the 300 hurdles (44.53) with a PR. Anthony Ramirez was third in the 800 with a personal best of 2:15.8 and Quintyn Madsen was third in the pole vault with a PR of 10-feet. Damien Jennings was fifth in the high jump at 5-4. Dominic Martinez was seventh in the 400 at 55.75 and eighth in the 200 at 26.08. Ramirez and Martinez teamed with Adan Garcia and Jacob Crossman to finish second in the 1600 relay, clocking a 3:47.28. Crossman was eighth in the 400 in 56.3.

Annalise Poor was fourth in the 300 hurdles with a 55.60. Kelly McCready was sixth in the triple with a PR of 28-11.

Dayton derails Sparks twice

DAYTON — The Dust Devils topped Sparks, 7-5 and 10-4, in a Northern 3A doubleheader Friday.

The teams play an 11 a.m. single game Saturday.

In the opener, Dayton scored one in the fourth and one in the fifth to snap a 5-all tie.

Shay Thompson went 2-for-3 and Amanda Woitas, who got the win in the circle, went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Marissa Hein, Julie Rogacs and Caleigh Onstott all had a hit and RBI.

In the second game, Onstott went the distance, allowing four hits and no earned runs.
