Prep Roundup: Track teams tune up at Big George in Minden

MINDEN — School records fell for the Dayton and Sierra Lutheran track and field teams on Saturday at the 11th annual Big George Invitational in Minden.

Sierra Lutheran senior Bret Walker set a school and personal record in the boys discus with a throw of 144-10 that was good for first-place at Douglas High School’s Big George Athletic Complex. The throw improved his previous best by more than four feet and surpassed the school record of 143-6 set by Zach Ferenz in 2016.

Earlier in the day, Dayton received a school record performance in the girls 4x200 relay, as Macie Callan, Sydney Strickler, Rebecca Mason and Ashley Mason clocked a 1:46.91. The time shaved one-half second from the school record they set one week before at the Carson Invitational and was fast enough to win the gold medal ahead of Douglas (1:47.86).

“They’ve been working hard,” Dayton coach David Palmer said, adding that the quartet ranks No. 1 in the event statewide among 3A schools. “They’re getting faster and we’re hoping they can keep chipping away at that between now and state.”

Ashley Mason also won the girls long jump with a 17-2 mark and the senior placed second in the triple jump (35-7-1/2). Her twin sister, Rebecca, placed third in the 400 (1:02.64) and fourth in the high jump (4-10).

A small group of Carson athletes competed at the meet, including junior Ashley Britt, who placed second in the girls 300 low hurdles (48.28) and third in the 100 hurdles (17.42).

Carson’s Alyssa Rowe placed second in the shot put with a personal record throw of 33-10.

Cody Main ran a personal best 17.79 to place sixth in the 110 high hurdles and he placed fourth in the 300 intermediate hurdles (44.71).

Sierra Lutheran’s Abby Ferenz took first-place in the girls high jump, as she tied her personal best of 5-feet to edge Hannah Carr of Douglas on fewer misses. Carr’s 5-0 was a personal best.

Carson’s Gabriel Gabica placed second in the pole vault (12-6) and Dayton’s Jeffery Walker placed third (11-6).

The Douglas girls collected five individual gold medals on the day: Megan Veil in the 300-meter low hurdles (47.17), Madison Smalley in the 400 (1:01.50), Addison Gregory in the 3,200 (12:44.92), Kindra Ruckman in the discus (100-3) and Meleeah McKown in the shot put (34-8).

The Tigers also captured the girls team title by a 158.5-149 margin over Reed. Dayton finished fourth with 59 points.

Sierra Lutheran edged Douglas by one point, 71-70, to finish fourth in the boys team standings. Reed rolled to the boys team championship with 142 points.

Note: Sierra Lutheran junior Jared Marchegger ran a personal record time of 9:39.10 in his heat of the 3,200 at the Sacramento Meet of Champions on Saturday.

SOFTBALL

Carson, Damonte split

RENO — Carson split its Saturday doubleheader with Damonte, winning the opener, 12-11, and dropping the second game. 13-3, in 4 1/2 innings.

Carson dropped to 10-6 with two games against Wooster (Tuesday and Thursday) and two against visiting Douglas next Saturday.

In the opener, the teams were deadlocked at 8, but Carson pushed across three in the sixth and one in the seventh, which was enough to withstand a three-run rally by Damonte in the bottom of the seventh.

Kailee Luschar returned from a concussion and went 5-for-5 with an RBI. Kassidy Cooley went 3-for-5 and Kedre Luschar went 3-4 with an RBI. Amaya Mendeguia had a homer and two RBI and Jailene Salciedo went 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBI.

Carson made four errors leading to six unearned runs.

In the second game, Damonte spotted Carson an early 3-0 lead and then scored 12 unanswered runs.

Salciedo was tagged for nine runs and 13 hits in 2 2/3 innings. Her DR opponent Hailee Sutton limited the Senators to four hits, one each by Camryn Quilling, Cooley, Nicole Brown and Kailee Luschar.

Dust Devils roll

DAYTON — Aleea McGill-Howe, Julie Rogacs and Tamia Powell all homered to lead Dayton past Sparks, 9-4, and a sweep of their Northern 3A series.

Sparks took an early 4-0 lead, but Dayton scored eight runs combined in the second, third and fourth innings to take control. Caleigh Onstott went the distance in the circle, allowing seven hits, striking out six and allowing zero earned runs.

Powell went 3-for-4 with three RBI, Rogacs’ homer was a solo shot and Howe went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

BASEBALL

Dayton completes sweep

DAYTON — The Dust Devils scored in four of their five at-bats en route to a five-inning, 11-1 win over Sparks on Saturday.

Jake Madson worked the first four innings, striking out six. Tyler Stolfich worked a scoreless fifth inning.

Isaac Von Schoff went 3-for-3 with an RBI, Trevor Burrows went 2-for-2 and drove in four runs, and Justin Schmidt went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Stolfich drove in three runs and Josh Pasasouk had two hits.
