Primka to be promoted by Carson City sheriff

Carson City Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jim Primka has been selected for promotionto lieutenant, filling the vacancy left by retired Capt. Jeff Melvin.

Promotion ceremonies are scheduled for Aug. 16 at 2 p.m. in the Ormsby Room of the sheriff’s office.

Primka has 22 years of experience. A U.S. Navy veteran, he was originally brought into the CCSO as a reserve deputy sheriff in 1994, and hired in June 1996. His original assignment was to the detention division.

He moved on to the patrol division in February 1997, and then was moved to the detectives division in March 2000. In February 2003, Primka was promoted to sergeant and placed back in the patrol division in the watch commander’s role.

Primka is a Carson High School graduate and holds an associate of applied science degree in criminal justice. He obtained his law enforcement certification with the state of Nevada Peace Officers Standards and Training at Truckee Meadows Community College in 1995 as a category I first responder and category III detention services.

His other state certifications include basic, intermediate, advanced, management certifications, as well as certifications for instructor and a supervisory certificate.

Primka was selected by managers and graduates of the FBI National Academy in 2017 to attend the National Academy, and successfully completed the international course of instruction in Quantico, Virginia, in early 2018.

Assigned to the operations division of the sheriff’s office, Primka has taken on numerous activities and responsibilities.

He has managed the division’s field training officers program, continuously been an active defensive tactics instructor, and embedded himself in the SWAT Team. Since 2014, Primka has been designated by the sheriff as the SWAT commander and is responsible for all of the supervisory and management functions of the team at the sheriff’s office.

As a result of his oversight, Carson City is among the growing number of communities who have integrated fire department paramedics into the SWAT team, who now deploy to emergencies as one seamless team.

Primka also is president of the Carson City Sheriff’s Supervisors Association.

Primka has been active in youth activities as a coach and mentor.
