Lily is a three-year-old female border collie/Lab mix who would love a home with no cats but she does love other dogs.
I realize how paranoid it appears when I check out bedbugplanet.com before I book a hotel room, but bed bugs have been turning up everywhere. In fact, I recently read about a gentleman who decided to get rid of his bug problem but blew up his home instead. Poor solution!
Enter the noble canine. At the J&K Canine Academy, dogs are trained to sniff out bed bugs. J&K partnered with researchers at the University of Florida to validate the effectiveness of the canine bug detectives. Dogs have an acute sense of smell, and they are able to detect bugs in the most remote places.
Several bug companies have employed the canine experts because they are especially suited for large-scale inspections where visual inspections are not practical. They are used for periodic inspections of hotel guest rooms, college dormitories, apartment complexes, movie theaters, schools and office buildings.
Some companies use two dogs simultaneously to get and confirm results quickly. With scent detection a canine can swiftly sweep an area and zero in on the problem. Unfortunately, some places, like electrical outlets, need to be inspected by humans. Another complication is scent travels, so bugs may not be present and visual confirmation is necessary.
Using canines cuts down on the time and number of people needed for inspections and provides a working partnership between human and dog. Dogs are man’s best friend. Bugs better beware.

SNAPS is a program offered to Churchill County residents through CAPS that provides low-cost spay/neutering for cats and dogs. To qualify for SNAPS, you need to have one of the following: Medicaid, a child enrolled in NV Check Up Program, food stamps, 2017 tax return stating income is less than $30,000 or Veterans disability card including a photo ID.
