It was tough sledding for the Carson High quartet of Jesse Case, David Remer, Kyle Rudy and Alex Wells at the NIAA 4A State Wrestling Championships on Friday at the Orleans Arena.
Case went 1-2, while Wells, Rudy and Remer all went 0-2. Rudy’s second loss was an injury default. Case lost a 3-2 in his elimination battle.
“Jesse did a great job all season,” Carson coach Nick Redwine said. “I wanted him to place, but it wasn’t in the cards. He ran into a tough kid from Faith Lutheran (in his second match).”
In the conso semifinals, Case led 2-1, but gave up a two-point near fall and lost a 3-2 decision to Centennial’s Tyler Roper.
Case produced the group’s only win, pinning Liberty’s Nate Kendricks in the third round of his opening match. Case was leading 10-1 at the time of the fall. He was in control pretty much the entire match.
Case met Faith Lutheran’s Connor Bourne in the semifinals. He fell behind 2-0 on a first period takedown, but bounced back with two single points, tying the bout at 2. Bourne worked a takedown and three-point near fall to make it 7-2. Case never recovered and lost 14-4.
Rudy, who suffered a torn labrum at the Placer Duals, was coming off a second-place finish at regionals. He entered the tourney with an injured shoulder.
Rudy was pinned by Green Valley’s Jeremy Hoffman in the first round of his opening match, and then he injury defaulted his consolation match, ending his high school career.
“The kid from Green Valley worked it over pretty good,” Redwine said. “It was a shame, and I feel bad that we had to scratch him, but after talking with his parents it was the right thing to do.”
Wells, a sophomore, was never able to generate any offense, losing 9-0 and 8-1.
Remer, the 170-pound regional champ, got behind 3-0 in his opening match and never recovered en route to a 6-4 loss.
In his elimination match against Liberty’s Jake Whiddon, Remer again fell behind early. He trailed 7-0, but thanks to a takedown and three-point near fall he cut the deficit to 7-5. Remer managed just one point the rest of the way, however.
“Wells and Remer both wrestled well,” Redwine said. “I think they are both disappointed with their finishes, but the fact that they wrestled in state as sophomores will be invaluable in years to come.”
