Prep Roundup: Carson High girls dismantle Wooster

Carson High scored 19 straight first-half points en route to a 65-16 win over Wooster in a 4A girls game Friday at Morse Burley Gym.

Carson improved to 3-7 in league play entering Tuesday’s road contest at Douglas at 5:15 p.m.

“The girls played hard,” CHS coach Melissa Larsen said. “We worked on our passing and attacking the basket. It was a great win and helps get our confidence up.”

Carson played with just eight players, as Haley Garver was sidelined with a concussion.

Wooster scored the first basket; after that it was all Senators. The Senators ended the quarter with 16 straight points, as Lily Bouza scored nine of her 20 in the opening quarter.

An 13-2 run at the start of the second quarter boosted Carson’s lead to 30-4. Abby Golik, who finished with 14 points, had five straight in one stretch.

Carson extended its 24-point halftime lead (32-8) to 38 after three periods (50-12). Bouza added six more points in the third quarter.

Abbey Paulson and Lauren Lemburg added nine points each.

Naycy Alvarez scored seven points to lead Carson’s JV girls to a 29-20 win over Wooster.

Douglas 54, Galena 44

Douglas bolted to a 15-2 first-quarter lead and went on to take over sole possession of second place at Galena on Friday.

Douglas (5-5 league, 8-12 overall) never allowed Galena (4-6, 8-10 overall) to get any closer than 10 points the rest of the way. The Tigers were tied with Galena and Damonte Ranch for second place coming into the game.

Kristen Farrell scored 28 points for Galena.

Lowry 60, Dayton 30

DAYTON — Lowry rolled over Dayton on Friday in a Northern 3A game.

Abby Sikora led Dayton with nine points and Cassie Dickenson added eight. Faith Reid contributed four points and three rebounds.

“We had a rough start, but picked it up in the second quarter,” Dayton coach Kelly Frantz said. “Overall, my bench came into the game strong and aggressive and I liked the intensity we all played with.”

Sierra Lutheran 42, Whittell 26

Sierra Lutheran won three quarters en route to a home win over Whittell on Friday in a Northern 1A game.

Ruth Boogman led the way with 14 points followed by Aleyna Gilson with 12. Mikayla Talkington chipped in eight points. Boogman and Gilson added seven rebounds, and Gilson also had five steals.

“This is the best we’ve played as a team,” SLHS coach Michael Nelson said. “The ball movement against their zone was the key to our victory. I was really proud of the defensive intensity we had, and I’m looking forward to next week.”

BOYS

Galena 65, Douglas 35

Moses Wood scored 18 of his game-high 24 points in the first half to spark Galena to the win on Friday in Reno.

Galena (6-4, 11-7 overall) scored 11 unanswered points late in the second quarter to take a 43-23 halftime advantage and went on to move into a second-place tie with Damonte Ranch in the Sierra League standings. Douglas (4-6 league, 6-13 overall) had a two-game win streak end.

Andrew Collins scored 18 points to lead Douglas.

Whittell 51, Sierra Lutheran 46

Whittell outscored Sierra Lutheran, 8-3, down the stretch to grab the win in a Northern Division 1 game Friday night.

The Falcons led 31-26 after three quarters.

“We had a great battle tonight between two really good teams,” SLHS coach Ben Walther said. “Unfortunately, we did not have the final outcome we wanted but I couldn’t be more proud of the effort the boys gave tonight.”

Kyman Berger led the Falcons with 20 points and six rebounds. Zane Warkentin scored 13 points, grab seven rebounds, three steals and three assists. Logan Schinzing pulled down 13 rebounds.

Lowry 62, Dayton 40

DAYTON — Lowry outscored Dayton 43-20 in the second half to grab a road win Friday night.

Dayton returns to action Saturday at 3 against Sparks.

The Dust Devils led 20-19 at the half, but couldn’t get anything going offensively in the final 16 minutes.

“We had a lot of turnovers in the third quarter that led to a lot of run outs,” said Kevin Ply, Dayton assistant coach. “Lowry was able to get separation. Lowry played really inspired basketball.”

Trevor Burrows scored 18 and Lance Peterson added 11 for Dayton.
